F-16 Teams
Dominate USAF's
Long Rifle Competition
U.S. Air Force teams flying Fighting Falcons won the top four places and all six in-
dividual honors in the Tactical Air Command's recent Long Rifle IV competition at
George AFB, Calif.
Long Rifle is a semi-annual bombing competition between the 12th and 9th Air Forces,
which include fighter wings of the Tactical Air Command.
To promote the realism of the event, four-member teams are selected at random, on
short notice, to represent their units. Each team has to fly from its home base, refuel
twice and attack a tactical target at a specific time.
First place in the competition went to an F-16 team from Nellis AFB, Nev. Second
place was won by the F-16 team from Luke AFB, Ariz., and third and fourth were taken
by F-16 pilots from Hill AFB, Utah, and Shaw AFB, S.C., respectively.
A total of 15 teams competed in the event. Other aircraft
flown included F-4s, A-10s and F-111s.
F-16 teams and pilots had the highest scores in each event.
UL. Butkus Lofgren of the 474th Tactical Fighter Wing, Nel-
lis AFB, was named the competition's Top Gun.
