Vy Dear Sir Your tavors ol June "«Jl*th
and July 1st advising me of the call of an
extra session of the Legislature reached me
only on the 5th m»t- I have therefore to
regret that it is out of my |»ower to he ;»t
\ tint in in time for the meeting. It' we were
Messed with anything like mail facilities in
Texas perhaps* \.<ur kind favors could have
reach**! me it) season Hut as it is they have
coin*' to hand tii lale I shall not make the
attempt to get there during the called ses-
sion.
I have come to this detereiination. not
In cause I think the importance of the oc-
casion is insufficient nor because of indo-
lence ; hut Seca«*e I hope and think and
Indieve there is hut one voice in Texas on
the Mitviect of on* claims and right to San
ta Fe. That onr claims as against the I
States is just and eouitahle. I think no one
who i disinterested will d'ulrt Th
I IVw» should assert and make uii effort to
establish and maintain it I am fully con-
viiicwl We have already too long remain-
fl <|uiet watting for the tieiiersl <«orern-
1 mi'iit to do us justice. Thuy have already
taken advantage of our inaction and at
tempted to make eajatal of our delay and
seiao U|mmi our territory lo their own benefit.
I Texas ha* heretofore waited ami trusted to
the magnanimity and generosity of the I .
States under the impression that they would
. do us justice. We would not act for fear
it would seem that we should injure some
great man or some party or that we should
be doing the t*eueral (lovcritnierit injustice
to sop|H»se or insinuate that they would nut
act laterally towards Texas. Now how
are they acting towards ust They allege
that our claim is unjust and urge that we
! admit it by our inaction. We must there-
fore now act or e.easc to nrg«' our claims
I know that we cannot enforce it against
the power of the I nited States ; hut we can
at least show (he world that we know our
rights although we may lie too weak to
maintain them against the military strength
of the Union. It will however cost the
! State hut litt!»■ to make the attempt to en-
force our jurisdiction. Should we in that
case he m« i ll\ the army of the I Jnited
States we should have nil Mint we are aide
to do. \ud in that event I hojie they would
place iis where we were lie/ore annexation
and New Mexico west of the Kin <iramie
and < 'alitornia they may have.
Yours truly J. A. tiKKIH'

/Mir Sir . \ (Hi will no doubt see by the
papers or perhapslearn l»v IfIter* that a
large and respcctaffle meeting of the citi-
zens of Harris county " favorable to the
I nion" wan last evening at the Cap-
itol when certain resolutions were offered
and adopted Dr. Moon1 ill the ('liair.
Now in\ dear sir. mv object in addrcsing
you these lines is to state facts no ax not
to ho misled I*v" any publications to the
contrary a# the ( hairman ha* control of
tlx- only paper published in this city and

sion and sentiments on the occasion.
For some days past tin* Wliiffi of this
city coojierntiug with a few of our north-
ern Democrats have lieen busy rallying
their strength to uphold our Senators and
the i 'ompromise Kill passed by the Feder-
al tiovernmeiit hut only advertised for a
meeting of the "friends of the 11 nion."
\l! believing themselves true friends of th ■
I nion a goodly number assembled. The
party having everything cut and dried as
the saving is they soon organized and a
committee of fifteen wi re ap|»ointed to
draft resolutions (which had been drafted
for several days liefore.) II \llen ( hairman
of the committee.
The resolutions were road and Tankers-
ly called upon for a S|h<ccIi which was
made in favor of the I nion but against
the resolutions.
\Iter considerable talk so much so that
Dr. Roberts got up mid stated that it was
" hi* meeting" and Mr T had no right to
oppose the resolutions and openly declared
in tin- meeting that Texas had no ri*;hI to
any portion ol New Mexico.
Vet after a good deal of fussing. the ones
tiou was «*alI«mI for and the < 'hairman as
well a* his friends being satisfied that they
were largely in the minority merely railed
for the ey ••* and adjourned not allowing
the opposition a voice on the subject.
M e called several times for a division
but the Chair would not grant it
To sum the matter up the W bigs and
northern Democrats after all their pains t:i
king and private electioneering for days
past signally tailed.
I wish \ on to inform your friend at \us-
