those pa i led votaries of pleasure who
wear crowns and who»r business is
to provide pleasures for the idle
pampered wealthy There ware fuun
tains or water falls in evary saloon
of the llotel de Ville and thsy ware
not only of every conceivable shape
and material but they were adorned
in still greater variety. Mosses or
creepers or tropical plants flowers of
one color or flowers with na two col
ors alike were variously grouped
around fountains whose faa shaped
spray issued uoni porcelain and
trickled from porcelain into porcelain
vases or whose sheaf like waters
poured front glass or whoae waters
were poured from gilt brome mer-
maids tritnn* and dolphins or rose
in column from white msrbla. Thick
groves of orange trees ladan with
fruit would hide an orehaatra or a
chorus which would in turn give the
compsny instrumental or vocal music.
Then there were flowers and shrubs
everywhere—not placed halter skel-
ter. but married harmoniousf
the chsrm Isy in the prodigality with |
which water son? flowersfid lights |
were showered on the pla«e The
new aqueduct has given the eity a
plentiful supply of that alemeat.
Paris now possesses floral resources
unequaled in the world. The Duke
of Mevonahire hiaiself haa not so ex-
tensive a collection of flowers as this
city owns. It haa a green house in
