THOMAS JEFFERSON once said, “America can not be prosperous unless
the farmer is prosperous.” He said that when America was an agricultural
country. Today our economists and our business leaders agree: “ America
cannot be prosperous until labor is prosperous.” Today America is a great
industrial nation and our statesmen are working toward the time when not
only the farmer but the workman can feel secure in the results of his labor.
It would be a strange thing if the thinking business man <Ud not share
in this belief. When labor prospers, he prospers. Something bke 58 ' ofthe
normal buying power of the country is concentrated in the ranks of labor.
Most of our great mass production industries could not even operate with-
out labor’s support. Workmen and families buy millions upon millions of
dollars worth of automobiles cigarettes, cosmetics, packaged foods
and drug products every year. In a word, the workingman has become the
