Some of the vegetable varieties grandpa and grandma raised in their garden
long ago still can’t be beat. But they are exceptions. Plant breeders have been
extremely busy during the last half century, and particularly in recent years,
developing new and better varieties and strains of all kinds. In addition jo
improving other characteristics in vegetables, they have been placing a lot of
emphasis on getting them to taste
better.
Now that peace-time gardens are
underway again, you can add to your
own keen interest in gardening and
your own and the family’s zest in eat-
ing vegetables by being more dis-
criminating than ever before in select-
ing varieties to plant. And when you
select for finer flavor you’ll usually
get all the other superb characteristics
thrown in, such as tenderness, fine
texture, good form, rich color, and
•ften greater vitamin content so much
desired today.
Ever munch a carrot right out of the
garden row? That’s the way to get
time carrot flavor. Put in a row or two
Nantes this season alongside the
■ .vrieties you usually plant. Compare
'he flavors. Nantes is the one with
the blunt rounded ends which many
home gardeners especially like.
Even snap beans vary enough so
hat choice of varieties can affect your
■njoyment in eating them. The del-
cate flavor of brittle, golden yellow
Pencil Pod is unsurpassed. Or, per-
haps you prefer green beans. Ferry’s
Plentiful is a decided improvement
over many of the older varieties with
flat pods; Tendergreen, a fairly new
round pod green bean, is in the same
class in excellence.
If you have never tasted the crisp
dark green crumpled leaves of Chief-
tain, the latest development in Savoy
or “odorless” cabbage, you have a treat
coming. While there’s no mistaking its
sistership to other cabbages, there’s a
difference!
A vast improvement has been made
in garden peas these later years. Little
Marvel and any of the Laxton type
have richer sweeter flavor than some
handed down from earlier days.
Naturally, you will want your vege-
table garden to consist mostly of your
old favorites and standbys. But a few
of the newer varieties added along
with the others may prove to be a
genuine revelation. If your dealer does
not have them, he can undoubtedly get
them for you.
Year by year plant breeders are forg-
ing ahead in the improvement of all
characteristics in vegetables. Home
gardens of the future are bound to
furnish fresh foods even more flavor-
ful, more nearly perfect In every way,
than in the past.

Mr. Davis has taught in the High
School for the past three years. He
has also served the church as an un-
usually faithful Sunday School su-
perintendent.

BAPTIST CHURCH NEWS
There were 61 in Sunday School
last Sunday. Again the Cradle Roll
class received the Attendance Ban-
ner. This was a very good attendance
for Sunday School as several of our
large families were unable to get
away from home because of the bad
roads. Sunday evening there were
no services at the church because of
the school services. The sermon was
brought by Rev. J. R. Kidwell, the
invocation by A. F. Parr and the
scripture by Rev. H. L, DeVaney,
and also the benediction.
Rev. DeVaney, pastor, spoke on
the subject last Sunday morning at
the worship hour, “Begone Devil.”
There will not be any worship ser-
vices or B.T.U. at the Baptist church
this Sunday. But there will be Sun-
day School. After Sunday School
every one will go to the High School
in cooperation with the Methodist
church, its people ana minister.
The ref will be what is known as Ru-
ral Life Sunday. A gospel sermon
will be brought at 11 a. m. by Rev.

It seems like yesterday that Nancy was playing with dulls.
Now she’s pushing her own baby carriage. Yes, therc’ve
been a Jpt of changes in the last fifteen years- most of them
so gradual we hardly noticed them at all.
Nancy didn’t grow up all at once. A tootii at a time—a
curl at a time—an inch at a time—and suddenly a l'ttle kid
sister was Mrs. Joe Jones, mother of Joe, Junior.
Like Nancy, the use of electricity has grown a lot in the
last fifteen years. Bui the price of electricity has been going
down steadily. You may not have noticed it because your
bill may be about the same—but how many appliances have
you added to your home since 1931? Actually, you’re get-
ting about twice as much electricity for your money now as
then.
Keeping clcvific service plentiful and cheap through years
of risi g costs was not easy. That today’s electricity is at its .
very ' vest price in history is a tribute to the hard work and
experience of the men and women of CPL, and to its sound
business, management.
