A LETTER TO COUSIN CHARLEY
IN TEXAS
Dear CHARLEY:
I got yore lettur frum Texas en just about the time I got it all the
banks up hear closed too. Hit didn’t make much diffrunce hear tho caus
aul the banks near about hear closed up a year ago and aint never opened
since. We bin usin coon skins and punkins fer money and gettin jest as
much bacon and coffee as we did when we had shore nuff money. Uv
cose the coon skins and punkins is heavier and take up more room.
Mabee thare is gold in the dollars but three good coon skins buy
jest as much as a dollar useto and I kno dern well them coon skins aint
got no gold in ’em. I kinder hate to monkey around with them punkins
tho. Me and the old woman and the kids tuk a wagon lode uv punkins to
town tother day to buy some close and sugar and coffee en we got so dern
meny little punkins in change thet thare wuzn’t hardly room to haul back
the goods we baught and the kids had to hang on the side uv the wagon.
Hit shore makes it inconvenyunt to hav to haul a waggon lode uv change
home.
I hear a good deal about the country yore in and if I ever get eny
more money ahead I’m coummin down thare to liv. These old flint hills up
hear is gettin mighty bare. Ain’t nothing growin on em cept sassfrass
sprouts and it’s doggone hard to kill em. But thay tell me thares still
money in circulashun down thare and thet you can sell yore crops fur cash.
I reckon we got some congressmen up thare in Washington frum
this state too, bgt we never hear eny thing thay said. We hear more about
Hooey Long frum I.usiana then we do frum our own men except Senetur
Robinson. He seems to be purty near as important as John Garner frum
yore state. I wunder if the demierats are agoin to straiten this country
out and git us back to prosperaty agin. I shore would like to buy a new
Ford and cum down to Texas.
Charley, if I wuz you, 1 wouldn’t worry bout that gold standard
business, caus hit don’t make eny differunce what money is made out
uv if you can buy things with it only jest the convenience uv carryin it
around. I reckon if the guvernment says money is good hit don’t make
any differunce whether it is paper or gold or coon skins. Coon skins is
good hear fer groceries and shoes and close and I ain’t never heard of
the guvernment sayin anything bout them whether thay wuz good or not,
but uv cose I can see hit would be kinder inconvenyunt to keep coon skins
and punkins in bank vaults and it might make a sorter unpleasant
odur fer a bank too. Thets the reason I guess thay don’t use em.
Your cousin JAKE.

GAINS OFFERED IN 1933. THE SEED FOR FUTURE WEALTH
