had eucceeded in freeing his hands just as the canoe capsized below
the falls. The current had carried him beyond a wooded point be-

Tom. rising. "I'm ready to take my punishment."

As the three boys came into
Rocklake they were met by a
messenger boy who handed
McNally a telegram. Tom
turned very white. Unable to
utter a word, he held out the

"Come home immediately if
you wish to see your mother
alive," the message read. Jack
looked at the Bad Egg and saw
his face was frozen in an ex-
pression of grief.
"You'd better hustle to change your clothes and catch the next
1 train, McNally," said Jack. "Nobody's going to keep you from go-
ing to your mother." "Thanks!" mumbled Tom. "I'll come back
and take my medicine." He dashed away at a run. "Maybe he's
been punished enough. Willie." said Jack. "I guess we d better keep
cur mcuths shut about him." “Just as you say," agreed Darling,

WASHINGTON, March 16. —
Government officials arc Jes* dis-
turbed over posalbllltlea of a gen-
eral strike of bituminous coal
miners on April 8 than at any pre-
vious time when a similar situa-
tion seemed Imminent.
In the first pluoe, all records for
accumulated storks of bituminous
jcoai will be broken when April 1
arrives. On Jan, 1, the Bureau
of Mines reported 55,000,000 tons
of soft coal Jiehl by dealers and
consumers, and 5,567,000 tons
more stored on the upper lake
docks awaiting transit.
•Since Jan. I, the weekly pro-
duction of bituminous coal haa
averaged 13,000,000 tons, which
Is at least a million more tons
weekly than Is being consumed or
exported.
A nation-wide survey conducted
by the Bureau of Mines two
months ago Indicates that only .'15
per cent of the bituminous coal
being mined is produced at union
mines.
