Old Greek Drain
Restored to Use
Princeton, N. J.—Two thousand
years ago engineers in Athens con-
structed a huge drain to carry off
the surface water from the market
place of the ancient Greek city.
Next year, when the cleaning pro-
cess is completed, this old drainage
system will again dispose of the
rain water which falls upon this
area.
Word of the discovery of the
drain and of its rehabilitation to
serve its original purpose was re-
ceived here recently from Dr. T.
Leslie Shear, professor of classical
archaeology at Princeton Univer-
sity. who is directing for the
American school of classical
studies, the long campaign of ex-
cavating the old Athens market
place.
The drain, according to dimen-
sions sent by Professor Shear, is
nearly four feet wide at the bot-
tom, tapering to slightly less than
a yard at the top and has a depth,
beneath the cover slabs, of eight
and one-half feet. The drain ex-
tends throughout the entire area,
-with secondary channels leading
into it at intervals. Excavation has
involved, in one place, tunneling
under an existing street.
