Broken Left At Tools
Fall In Well
John Harding, well driler assist-
ing F. A. Gray in well drilling
work at the plant of the Ozona
Water Works, narrowly escaped
death Monday afternoon when his
toot became entangled in a cable
and he was jerked into the mouth
of the well by the force of 1700
pounds of tools and cable falling
into the hole.
Roth bones in the leg were brok
en between the ankle and the knee
and the foot was badly crushed.
The injured man was rushed to a
San Angelo hospital where the
broken bones were set. Report
from his bedside Wednesday indi-
cated that he was doing well.
The accident nccured around 4
o'clock Monday afternoon. Mr.
Maiding was straightening out the
cable on the drum after the bit
had been lowered into tin* well.
The well where the accident oc-
curred was one tliat was drilled
last year and was to he deepened.
The driller thought the hit was on
the bottom oi the hole and Mr.
Maiding was straightening the ca-
ble in preparation for beginning
drilling operations. The bit was
hung on a ledge, however, and
while Mr Maiding was standing n\
er the coiled cable it slipped off
and began falling into the hole,
whipping the cable on top of the I
vniuud to throw a loop around the
workman's loot.
Mr. Harding's foot was jerked j
into the well and the fact that Mr!
Gray threw a loop of the cable!
around a bolt protuiliug from the
concrete base around the well and
checked the tail ot the string ol
tools probably sated the mail's lift-
It was also hchcvfd that the hit
struck the bottom of the well and
