to learn a little bit about our
government. Not .only did WC
learn about government, but we
learned about other people, we
saw many sights, and gained
many memories.
While sightseeing we saw
about 10 national monuments
(Including the Washington
Monument, Jefferson Memorial,
Vietnam Memorial, Lincoln
Memorial, Franklin D. Roosevelt
Monument, and a memorial to
the seven astronauts who were
killed in the Challenger explo-
sion). We also saw the
gravesites of Presidents
Woodrow Wilson, John F.
Kennedy, and William H. Taft.
In addition to these we saw
Ford's Theatre. The Eternal
Flame, the National Archives,
and Arlington National
Cemetery and numerous others.
Of all of these places we vis-

Consolidating domestic subsidiaries of the

Llano
National Cemetery the most. It
had unbelievable numbers of
graves of military personnel. It
seemed unreal to be walking
among the endless rows of
headstones and memorials. We
saw the graves of Audie Murphy
(the most decorated soldier in
America's history). Joe Louis
(often known as "the Brown
Bomber" of boxing), and Robert
F. Kennedy, who may have
changed the course of history
had he not been assassinated
and been elected president.
This place was truly amazing.
On this trip we sat through
seminars by officials on sub-
jects like foreign policy, the me-
dia, and domestic issues, in
these seminars the speakers
gave their opinions on the top-
ics and followed with a mock
press conference while partici-
pants stood and asked direct
questions to them. These semi-
nars were very informative.
In addition to learning about
government and the city itself,
we learned about other people.
There were about 150 people
involved in Close-Up. These
were divided Into workshops of
about 20 people. In these work-
shops we learned about differ-
ences in views from around the
country on different topics, like
abortion and elVil rights. The
environment that these people
lived in greatly affected their
views. Some were from San
Francisco. Their views on gang
violence and drug enforcement
jxere often different from those
of the Utah students, most of
whom were Mormon. Basically,
though, most teenagers are
somewhat the same all over the
country. All were Interested in
meeting new people and gaining
new experiences.
My favorite person at Close-
Up was my workshop director,
Scott. He was easy to relate to
and was always eager to teach
us new things. He stressed that
the most important thing in our
workshops was our opinion.
Throughout the week he gave us
opportunities to express them
to each other.
The most graphic memory I
have is of the Changing of the
Guards at the Tomb of The Un-
known Soldier in Arlington Na
i -Republican Stale Represen-
tative Troy Fraser, has an-
nounced his candidacy for
Texas Senate District 25 which
i includes Llano County.
"I'm running because, as a
businessman and legislator. I'm
familiar with what it takes to
make payroll and create Jobs. I
want to do more to bring eco-
nomic growth to this area," said
Fraser, who built a manufac-
turing company with plants in
Texas and Arkansas.
Fraser said opposition to the
state Income lax would be a key
part of his campaign. "The Sen-
ate is a hotbed of pro-income
tax supporters. When elected,
my first act will be to sponsor a
constitutional amendment to
prohibit a state income tax," he
said.
Fraser, the first Republican
elected to the Texas House from
. District 69, was named
• "Legislator of the Year" by the
.....National Republican Legislators
.Association in 1991. He serves
i on the House Committees on
{Business and Commerce and
Public Education. His leader

tional Cemetery. The soldiers
were sharp and exact about ev
erything in Iheir duty. This
showed pure dedication and
loyalty to the memorial of these
"Unknown Soldiers." I felt great
respect and admiration at this
place.
. Overall, I feel that this week at
Close-Up was one of the great-
est experiences of my life. It
was a chance to learn about
government, our nation's
capital, other people, and
especially myself. I learned that
we lie in the greatest nation on
the planet Earth.
