The National Education Associ-
ation, composed of school-teach-
ers of the entire country, has
started a vigorous campaign for
the improvement of country
schools. The first and most im-
portant step to be taken in this
direction ih to find some way of
paying better salaries to country
school teachers.
On the question whether coun-
try schools, especially rural high
schools, ought to give more atten-
tion to socalled “vocational” edu-
cation, there is room for a sharp
difference of opinion. Most of the
teachers think that farming, car-
pentering. sewing, cooking and
the like should be taught in the
schools. A few maintain that the
place to learn any trade is "on the
job,” that the elements of educa-
