BECOME BROWNIES — Several of the little girls shown above became mem-
bers of Brownie Troop 137 last week in ceremonies at the home of the troop
leader, Mrs. Gerald Centilli. Brownies, new and old, shown left to right,
sitting, are: Diane Morrison, Candy Soto, Diane Peynado, Mary Alice Karle,
Gail Womack and Neva Short. Standing: Margaret Wade, Mikie-Collier, Ka-
ren Onderdonk, Jerri Kaye Dalton, Aida Saldana, Kathleen Dalton, Linda
Freeman, Elizabeth Lieck, Phyllis Jacobs, Sharon Baker, Leah Fowlkes,
and Sharon Adams. Standing behind the Brownies are Mrs. L. A. Short, as-
sistant, Mrs. Centilli, the leader, and Mrs. Dan Morrison, assistant.
Rites Thursday
Funeral services will be
held this morning at 10 a.m.
at Our Lady of Mercy church
for Si Wheat Jr., 62, who
died at his home at 142
East Liberty Tuesday morn-
ing.
Mr. Wheat had lived in
Mercedes four years and
16 years in La Feria and
Weslaco.
Surivors include his wi-
dow, Mabel of Mercedes; a
son, Si III, of Mercedes;
a daughter, Mrs. Harold Mil-
ler of Harlingen. Other sur-
vivors are five grand-
children, one great-grand-
child, one brother and one
sister.
Burial will be in Ebony
Groves Cemetery. Stotler
Mortuary is in charge of
arrangements.
AN 8th GRADER
Bobbie Kay Jones, who
was listed in the junior-high
school honor rollasa seven-
th grade student, should have
been listed as an eighth grade
student according to the
office of the junior high
school principal, H. D. Wal-
lace. Bobbie Kay was a
straight ‘A* student for the
second six-week period.

Mercedes high Tigers won
two and lost two games in
the weekend Mission basket-
ball tourney. Monday night,
Tigers were to play in San
Benito, but the game was
cancelled because of football
banquets.
Next action for the Tigers
begins this morning at 9 a.m.
when Mercedes and the Donna
Redskins open the three-
day Harlingen tournament
followed by a trip to Ed-
couch-Elsa December 13.
Ronnie McClendon and
Danny Rodriguez were high
point men for the Tigers
in Mission. McClendon aver-
aged 15 points and was also
selected on the All-Tourna-
ment team. Rodriguez aver-
aged 12 points.
For the tourney's re-
bounding trophy, Steve Hager
was nosed out of the award
by Jerry Chambers of Don-
na. Hager collected 53 rose-
bounds, but Chambers top-
ped this with seven more.
In the Tiger’s tournament
opener, San Benito, was de-
feated 56 to 44. McClendon
and Jesse Villarreal tied
for high points scored. Both
had 14.
Mercedes edged the Los
Fresnos five 44 to 42. Villa-
rreal and McClendon again
tied for high points as they
hit for 14 each followed by
Hager with 12 hits.
In the last two games,
Mercedes lost to Premont
and Donna. Premont was at
51 when the buzzer ended
the game. Mercedes had
scored 40 points, 19 of them
by Villarreal.

54-41.
