Don’t Pass I p F ree
Serviee At Outlets
Maybe the best things m
life aren't really free, but If
ymi pass up those free aerv
ires offered by service out-
lets, it may cost you
Take the simple preciiu
turn of checking battery
water levels It requires
only a few seconds of time
and absolutely no money
But if battery fluid levels
are allowed to drop and the
condition is not detected, it
could mean premature de-
terioration ol the battery
It could cause an incon-
venient "can't start” *as
well..
During hot. dry periods of
summer, battery water is
■more likely to evaporate.
So. especially during warm
weather months, have the
battery checked every time
you stop for gas
In addition to water lev-
els. have, the battery
checked for corrosion and
soundness of tile cables
Another free service tintt
can save you money - is
checking the tires for prop-
er inflation Both under-
inflation and overinflation
can be harmful to tires,
/wearing them out prema-
turely For accurate read-
ings, do not have the tires
checked after you’ve driven
more than a few miles.
Other free checks that
will help prevent trouble
include inspection of oil
level and windshield wash-
er fluid. Low levels of oil
can lead to engine damage
and no fluid in .the washer
reservoir could hamper vis-
ibility at a critical time.

Dear DeDe:
My husband is a commer-
cial pilot and understand-
ably is very finicky about the
condition of his plane. But
what drives me batty is that
he is also a dingbat when
it comes to our car. We are
always late wherever we go
because Bob insists on per-
forming what he calls a
“pre-flight check” before he
gets into the car. He checks
the tires, the wipers, the oil
and water and a dozen other
items before he’ll even move
out of the driveway. I’m all
for safety but don’t you
think he’s carrying this
thing too far?
Mrs. R.W.
Chicago, Illinois
Dear Mrs. R.W.:
Perhaps your husband is
carrying things too far. But,
if he is, at least he’s on the
side, of the angels. (A good
place for a pilot to be.) Too
many motorists pay no at-
tention to fundamentals like
proper tire pressure, oil lev-
els, good wipers and other
basics necessary for trouble-
free performance. He wants
to fly now and drive later in
a safe manner.

.safety belts is the s.ilesl and
best wav to keep children
from jumping around in the
car. Set a good example liv
using your own hell, and make
it clear that the car never

Have some pillows in the
car so the kids will lie more
comfortable if they nap.
Fresh fruit, graham crack-
ers, non-sticky cookies, and a
thermos of ice water or lem-
onade are good items to have
along. A snack and a cool
drink relieve boredom.
Another pacifier is a (lamp
wash cloth in a plastic hag for
warm faces and sticky hands,
or the chemical wash and dry
cloths.
An assortment of games and
hooks helps keep youngsters
occupied on long drives.
It is an exrellent practice
to plan each day’s drive so
that it ends by about *1 pan.
This gives Ixith parents and
children a chance to get some
exercise and settle down be-
fore the evening meal.
DID YOl KNOW?
Did you know that if you
drive a car an average of
10,000 miles per year its
spark plugs have probably
fired some 15 million times
during that period? That’s
why they should be serviced
at 5,000 miles and replaced
at 10,000 miles.
