annual meeting of the
National Cotton Council. The
convention is scheduled at
Jacksonville, Fla., January
31 - February 1 at the Rob-
ert Meyer and George Was-
hington hotels.
Council delegate repre-
sent the seven major cotton
interests — producer, gin-
ner, cottonseed crusher,
merchant, warehouse, spin-
ner, cotton cooperative —
and the 18 cotton producing
states. Mr. Dudley is a pro-
ducer delegate.

Minister Arrives
The Rev. Leo J. Tripp
has assumed duties as pas-
tor of the First Presby-
terian church of Mercedes.
He fills a vacancy in the
church left last February
when the Rev. Mike Murray
left Mercedes to serve in
Kingsville.
The Rev. Mr. Tripp and
Mrs. Tripp have moved to
Mercedes to 1509 South Mis-
souri from Elsa, where they
lived for many years.
The Rev. Tripp was in the
lumber business in Elsa and
Monte Alto until seven years
ago when he began studying
for the ministry and became
pastor of a Presbyterian
church in Tivoli, Tex.
During the time he was
serving the Tivoli church
and attending school, he also
was stated supply for the
Six Mile Community church
six miles out of Port Lava-
ca. His service of the two
churches and attendance at
the school covered a period
of three years.
In 1962, he became pastor
of the Iago Federated
church. This church is made
up of a congregation repre-
senting 10 denominations.
Preachers of the various
denominations take turns in
serving the congregation for
a specific period.
The following year, the
Rev. Mr. Tripp returned to
Elsa, where he had lived
while in the lumber com-

January 10.
The outstanding program
award for the month of Sep-
tember was presented to the
Epsilon Psi Chapter ofMer-
cedes, also second place
award for the months of
October and November.
Members attending the
meeting from the Epsilon
Psi Chapter were Mrs. Billy
Drawe, Mrs. William Sava-
rino, Mrs. E. C. Barzar,
Miss Vera Barry and Miss
Charlotte Dunn. From the
Gamma Lambda chapter in
Mercedes were Mrs. El-
liott Lyons, Mrs. E. V. Mit-
chell, Mrs. L. M. McDonald
and Mrs. Glenn Henderson.
The next district meeting
will be in April with the
Epsilon Psi chapter as hos-
tess.

the Rev. Mr. Tripp had ser-
ved in the Presbyterian
church in several capacities.
He was Sunday school super-
intendent for the Elsa Pres-
byterian church then be-
came ruling elder. He also
served nine months as lay
minister.
For 10 years before enter-
ing the ministry, he has ser-
ved as lay preacher for
Presbyterian churches in the
Valley, visiting different
churches when regular pas-
tors could not be in the pul-
pit.
The Tripps have one son
and three grandchildren.

bour Jr. of the Evangelism
Division, Dallas, is to be
speak for the Quarterly
W.M.U. meeting of the Low-
er Rio Grande Valley Bap-
tist Association. The topic
will be "Tell It Again — in
Mission Work.”
The meeting will be at
First Baptist Church, San
Benito, Thursday. January
20, 9:30 a.m. to noon.
Conferences for all youth
workers and for every mem-
ber of W.M.U. are planned.
Mr. Neighbour will speak to
all presidents, community
missions chairmen and pas-
tors.
Rotary Couple
Introduced
Chamber of Commerce
manager George Wheeler
told about Chamber activi-
ties and two Mercedes high
school seniors were intro-
duced as ‘Rotary Couple of
the*Month* at Tuesday*s Ro-
tary club meeting here.
Mr. Wheeler pointed to
"the individual’s responsi-
bility in boosting his com-
munity”. And he distributed
a new color brochure pro-
duced by the Chamber which
tells ‘the Mercedes story’.

Rites Thursday
For Mrs. Garcia
Funeral mass for Mrs.
Antonia Lopez Garcia, resi-
dent of Mercedes for 52
years, will be celebrated
this morning, Thursday, at
10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mer-
cy church.
Mrs. Garcia was born
August 9, 1886 in Starr Coun-
ty. The Garcia family owned
the grocery store on Mile
2 East and Mile 9 3/4 North.
Survivors include Benja-
min Garcia; three daughters,
Mrs. Gustavo Gonzales of
McAllen, Mrs. Anocencio
Del Angel of Mercedes, Miss
Isaura Lidia Garcia of Mer-
cedes; three sons, Roberto,
Manuel of Mercedes and
Julio of Kingsville.
Rosary was said atStotler
chapel Wednesday night at
8 p.m. Following church
rites, burial will be in Catho-
lic cemetery.
