Quarterback Stove Kerne
Is Feared Most By Monets
According to East Central
coach Glenn Hill, Gobbler quar-
terback is the most underrated
quarterback in the district. “I’ve
been really impressed with
Kenne,” said Hill.
‘ ‘He has fine speed and has an
excellent throwing arm,” Hill
KENNE...feared the most
added. Hill indicated that he
hoped most of Cuero’s attack
will not involve Kenne.
“There is not one boy on our
club that can outrun Kenne let
alone Whittington or Johnson,”
commented Hill.
Hill has been at East Central
for the past 11 years compiling
a 70-40-7 record. He came to
East Central from Falls City.
East Central is in good shape.
“We need this game bad and our
boys are really up,” claimed
Hill.
Hill places the finger on one
linebacker and a guard to carry
East Central’s potent defense.
“We are going to stop Cueco’s
inside running,” he said. “And
possibly the out-side game. I
feel they will pass against us.”
t
Hornets’ mentor feels Johnson
can burn anyone anywhere and he
hoped Whittington would not get
loose.
East Central has held their
previous opponents to only 20
points, three more than Cuero.
Hill admitted that East Central's
weekest moments on defense are
when the opposition passes. He
also commended Gobbler tight
end Robert Gree'i for his pass
catching abilities.-
East Central will use the same
type of game plan as Cuero does,
saidHill. “We will probably just
keep punching at them and hope
they wear down,” he added. "I
don’t think they will pass much
against us.”
On a final note Hill stated, “The
zone title will be on the line this
- Friday night.”

East Central picked up most
of their field position by

stated that the Hornets still
perform some razzle dazzle
using the halfback pass which
almost cost the Gobblers
the win last year.

Although rumors of last
year's game against East
Central still persist, it is now
history. Some say the year of
the Gobbler is now. It all begins
this Friday night at 8 p m at
Gobbler Stadium Several take
Gilbreth’s point of view-it should
be a close one. Others don't,
keeping in mind the flukes of
last year by the Hornets.
A loss for the Gobblers Fri-
day night could possibly upset
the whole apple cart. Although
a 9-1 is the dream of most Dis-
trict 14-AAA teams and a suc-
cessful season, Gilbreth consid-
ers such a record as unsuccess-
ful.
Compared to the past five
games, 325 yards on the ground
is somewhat under par.
Gilbreth said he would not try
anything fancy but to stick to
his normal game play-three yards
and a cloud of dust and maybe
we can wear them down.
“Their defense contains the
outside attack and hinders the
middle running game," explains
Gilbreth. That leaves only one
other possibility but such a
mention would be worthless.
Earlier in the season Gilbreth
said he would have to rely on his
experienced defense and hope the
offense could put enough points
on the board to win. That, the of-

ing staff feels East Central has
three outstanding linebackers
and a couple of good linemen.
East Central has allowed only
20 points to be scored against
them although their competition
has been a little lackadaisical
compared to Cuero's previous
foes. East Central’s offense has
scored 107 points.
Gilbreth again emphasized but
calmly that the Gobblers are
ready for district competition
even against an undefeated East
Central team.
“Our passing game is beginning
to compliment our running
game,” said Gilbreth. "Of

“Football Game” contest appears to be the easiest
yet with only 10 games appearing on the entry form. The
pot currently stands at $140. Depositing deadline is 4
p.m. Friday. Enter as many as you wish.
Last .week 308 points were scored in 12 games. Ray
Kelley and Michael Martin of Cuero picked 11 of 12 coming
the closest.
Mild mannered reporter’s selection of winners this
week are CUERO vs. East Central, CANYON vs. Gonzales,
SAMUEL CLEMENS vs. Judson, KERRVILLE vs. Crystal
City, FRED’SBURG vs. S. A. Southwest, UVALDE vs.
Pleasanton, LULING vs. Yorktown, Yoakum vs. COLUM-
BUS, NIXON vs. Somerset, HALLETTSVILLE vs. Tide-
haven.
Total number of points to be scored is 285.
Cuero football players found their guessing disasterous
but have noted that they will certainly try again. Accord-
ing to Arthur Whittington. Anthony Whittington, Quincy
Whittington, and Gary Kuecker the contest is a sinch-o this
week. Other players who have entered were David Hill,
Alan McWhorter, and Glenn Schultz.
About the Cuero game..? Cuero, 21; East Central, 0.
Reasoning: Last year East Central held the Gobblers to
10 points and scored seven themselves. But, Cuero moved
the ball from one end to another. Fumbles caused the ball
to turn over to East Central several times when Cuero
was in scoring position. East Central's lone tally came on a
flea-flicker. They did not move the football very well against
last year's Gobblers.
Consequently, a lop-sider will result this Friday night.
Buster Gilbreth says he would just like to win by one.

New York Giants quarterback runner-up Randy Johnson
has decided to retire into private business. He is the son-
in-law of Mr. and Mrs. John Wheeler of Cuero.
According to UPI, Johnson is not satisfied being a back-
up to Norm Snead.
The former Texas AAI standout will be visiting Cuero
soon, say relatives.
He will operate a private business in Florida. Reports
are that he has no desire to continue his pro football career.

Several hunters are and have been migrating to Colorado
for mule deer hunting. Of the known Cueroites who have
gone are Sterling Morrovt and Jay Bramlette. Don McFar-
land will leave next Tuesday.
Morrow said he would like to return to Cuero with a
maximum trophy. Last year he claimed a two-pointer...
two pointed horn frog that is.

Ask if he thinks he will be
able to gain 100 yards or more
he said, “Sure, I think so.”
Most of Whittington’s plays
are designed towards Cuero’s
outside due to his 9.7 speed in
the hundred. He said he also
likes to run off-tackle.
Whittington gives consider-
able credit to his running mate
fullback Tanny Johnson. John-
son on several occasions has
been responsible for clearing
the way with key blocks. “I have
to rely on him much of the
time,” said Whittington.
He said he does not fear East
Central’s Split-4 one bit. “It’s
a challenge,” he added.
