LEOPARD TALES

Track Year Looks
To Be Good One
Says Coach Scott
TJC track coach Danny Scott
looks for the 1966-67 year to be
a good one track-wise. “We should
have a good relay team this year,”
he pointed out as he looked over
the returning men and the recruits.
Nine track men will be return-
ing this year, including six letter-
men. Lettermen are Ramiro Garza
of Del Rio, who won in conference
with the half, mile. Steve Algood
of Taylor and Richard Periera, Kil-
leen, return to run the half mile.
Periera won fourth in conference
with the half mile. Morgan Dawns,
Temple, won conference with the
broad jump and got second in
hurdles. Mike Taylor, Hurst, and
Larry Oakes, Dallas, return to the
high jump.
The other returning men are
John Shoup, high jump; Johnny
Burke, pole vault; and David Bur-
son, sprinter.
Incoming freshmen include An-
gle Jasso, University High, Waco,
miler; David Harlan, Fort Worth,
sprinter; Johnny Porter, Center,
sprinter; and Danny Walsh, Wich-
ita Falls, sprinter.
Ten or twelve meets are in the
line-up for the track team this
year, and the teams in our con-
ference will be “plenty tough,” ac-
cording to Coach Scott.
TJC was organized September
6, 1926.

Leopardettes Begin Fourth Year
As District IV DGWS Champions
As District IV DGWS Champ-
ions Temple Junior College’s Leop-
ardettes begin this year their
fourth year of competition. The
team has come a long way since
the opening season of play in 1963-
64, according to Coach Frances
Garmon.
TJC won 26 and lost only 5 in
1965-66. Most of those losses were
to nationally ranked AAU teams.
The Leopardettes participated in
the national AAU tournament in
1966.
Tough Schedule
According to Miss Garmon, the
schedule will be unusually tough
this year with such teams as na-
tionally ranked AAU teams Ouach-
ita Baptist College, Martin’s of
Pasadena, and Wayland Baptist
Colege scheduled.
The TJC tournament is sched-
uled Dec. 9-10. Miss Garmon says
that this should be one of the
strongest college tournaments held
in Texas.
Returning Starters
The Leopardettes’ future appears
bright with five starters return-
ing.
Rose Lefner and Donna Taylor
return as forwards. In her fresh-
man year Miss Lefner led the team
in scoring and was runner-up in
total rebounds. Miss Lefner is a
good ball handler and a fine scorer
off the post position. Miss Taylor
returns with her amazing accuracy
on outside shots.
Jan Zapalac’s experience at the
roving position is expected to be an
asset. Miss Zapalac is aggressive
on defense, drives well and has a
good jump shot.
Judy Villarreal and Gina Geld-
meier return in the guard position.
Miss Villarreal will not be eligible
the first semester. Much is expect-
ed of Miss Villarreal in the latter
part of the season.
Miss Geldmeier is very capable
on defense and is leading rebound-
er for the Leopardettes. Much of
the defensive success of the team
will depend on Miss Geldmeier.
Freshmen
The addition of the much needed
height and speed will be supplied
by incoming freshmen. The fresh-
men range in height from 6’ 1” to
5’ 2”. Freshmen enrolling this
fall are:
Marilyn Aschenbeck, 6’ 1” for-
ward from the high school state
championship team Round Top-
Carmine. She has a 32 point high

Any other boys who wish to are
encouraged to come out for the
basketball team, Brown stated. He
said that no spots on the team are
