So, the Ross S. Sterling Rangers are the un-
disputed champions of District 23-5A girls basket-
ball. Would you believe the Rangers can also make
history this season?
No, believe it or not, their overall record of 24-1
(so far) isn’t the best in school history. Of course,
that depends on how you look at it. Percentage-
wise, it is. Best winning percentage means the
most number of wins against fewest losses. Here’s
where historians get into arguments.
For example, which is the better record: 30-2 or
29-1? Obviously, 30 wins is better than 29. But in the
loss category, any coach would rather have one
than two. To each their own. But any way you slice
it, the Ranger girls will emerge from the 1984-85
season with one of their finest performances.

It appeared that even the
Leopards’ hot shooting touch
wouldn’t be enough to topple the
Rebels in the first half. LC took
control early and surged to a 14-
point lead (36-22) on a basket by
Armer with 8:30 to play.
The trend continued until the
final 2:30, when Temple put
together six unanswered points
to make it 46-44. By haftyime, the
Rebels were clinging to a 50-46
advantage.
With the Leopards nearly mat-
ching the Rebels shot for shot, it
wasn’t until the midway point of
the second half that the hosts
took fharge. But their 71-58 lead
on a rebound basket by Joseph
wasn’t to hold long.
Before Hefley and Co. knew
what hit them, their lead had
dwindled to three points (77-72)
on a jumper by guard Jeff Simp-
son. But Jones retaliated with
two straight inside-move
buckets to give the Rebels just
enough breathing room.
In the final five minutes, the
closest the Leopards could come
was within seven points of the
lead.
The victory gave the Rebels a
5-2 record in independent play
