Comedian wasn't buried
Don Rickies is alive and throwing insults
' By DICK KLEINER
NEA Correspondent
DEAR DICK — Please, before
there is bloodshed and a break
up of two old sisters. One of them
. maintains that she saw Don
Rickies being buried and no-one
was there except his family. Yet
we saw him on a roast to Michael
Landon. Is Rickies still living?
B.A.C., SantaMaria, Calif.
The old sister who saw Don
Rickies being buried should
check her eyeglasses. Rickies is
still alive and mean.
DEAR DICK — For years, in
UhT’SOs and ’60s, KTBC in
Aiistfn, Texas, broadcast a
Saturday afternoon filler called
“Industry on Parade.” It was an
odd but interesting show, ap-
parently aimed at kids. It in-
troduced them to the real world
of business, commerce and pro-
duction. We need something like
this on TV now to counter-
bidance the surrealism of to-
day’s junk. What happened to
the show, and could it be reviv-
ed? R.J.K., Spencer, Wis.
There were a few such shows
back in those days, mainly
because they were inexpensive
— the films were generally in-
dustrial films, supplied at no
cost by the companies that made
them- as g form of self-
promotion. ABC, which aired
them, was the weakest network,
and this was a way of cheaply
filling a gap in the schedule. To-
day, there would be np audience
foir those shows — can you see*
people tuning in to watch “The
Magjc of Lumber” or “The
Cranberry
anberry Story” (I’m not mak-
ing those titles up, they were
part of that series) these days?
DEAR DICK -Could you teU
me if Chad Lowe, the star of
“Spencer,” is related to Rob
Lo!we, of “The Outsiders”? If so,
ru
[Tie
uttzt
ATRES
asas,.
how? How old is Chad? B.H.,
Reading, Pa.
The Lowes are brothers. Rob,
the high Lowe, is 20, and Chad,
the low Lowe, is 17.
DEAR DICK — One of your
readers asked about a Stacy
Keach movie, in which he played
a doctor. I believe it was
“Twinkle, Twinkle, Killer
Kane.” A.J., Amarillo, Texas.
DEAR DICK: In a recent col-
umn, you were asked about the
“Airwolf” helicopter. It is a Bell
222, not 220, as you said. The
modifications made to it for
“Airwolf” are mainly to the
chopper’s exterior and do not
alter its extremely elegant ex-
terior lines. E.E., Morgantown,
Pa.
DEAR DICK: You had a ques-
tion about Merle Haggard’s
wives. He has had three wives —
Leona Hobbs, the mother of his
four children; Bonnie Owens;
and Leona Williams. M.J., Fort
Mill, S.C.
Thanks for thos#* amplifica-
tions.- It is always good to have
experts among your readers.
DEAR DICK - I watch “As
the World Turns.” There is a girl
on the show called Margo. Since
she is the second Margo, is it
possible that the original Margo
was played by Erin Gray, who is
now on “Silver Spoons”? My
husband says I’m mistaken.
Please , say T ain correct. K.P.,
Shillington, Pa.
I wish l could, but I can’t.
Margo was originally, played by
Margaret Colin, and is now be-
ing played by'Hillary Bailey.
‘DEAR DICK — One of the fun-
niest albums I have heard was
Gary Owens’ “Put Your Head on
My Finger,” an MGM album
that dates back to 1972. Where
can I get a copy of this or where
can I-reach Gary Owens?
D.D.D., Pottsville, Pa.
Station KIIS, 6255 Sunset Blvd.,
Hollywood. CA 90028.
DEAR DICK - Can you tell
me how old Melissa Gilbert, the
star of “Little House on the
Prairie,” is? How did she get
started in show business? C.H.,
Houston, Texas.
She’s a big girl now — Melissa,
will be 21 in May. She comes
from a show business family and
was put in front of a camera
when she was only 3.
DEAR DICK — Just a small
argument between friends. Does
an actor or actress receive
money for picture re-runs even
though it might be 20 years after
being filmed? We were especial-
ly thinking of President Ronald
Reagan. Does he still receive
money for the movies he made?
Mrs. N.C., Santa Maria, Calif.
The Screen Actors Guild con-
tract with the film producers en-
titles actors to money on any and
every picture shot since 1960.
The amount of money they get, a
SAG official tells roe,‘is deter-
mined by the amount of money
the producer gets for the reruns.
So it is possible that President
Reagan gets a few dollars since
he made a few films — and some
TV shows — after 1960.
DEAR DICK — I have enjoyed
watching “Days of Our Lives”
for a long time, but now they
have ruined it with their
madames and prostitutes. Why
do they allow this? Doug or Julie
would never have played such a
part. F.W., Kendall, Mich.
I don’t know what Doug or
Julie might do, but I do know
that Bill Hayes and-Susan
Seaforth Hayes, who were the
actors who played Doug and
Julie, are working professionals.
If they had good parts as crooks
or prostitutes they would play
them. As for the show being
“ruined” by all .that, it’s the old
story -r- if people weren’t wat-
ching, they wouldn’t have that
sort of character. It may not be
uplifting and very nice, but it is
commercial.
DEAR DICK - I know that
most TV stars change their
names for the screen. Could you
tell me if Carl Lumbly of
“Cagney & Lacey” is really Carl
L. Brumby? B.R., Racine, Wis.
As a matter of fact, nowadays
most actors keep their real
names — Dzundza, DeVito,
Feinstein, etc. Carl Lumbly tells
*nne he has never heard of Carl L.
Brumby. “If I did change my
name,” he says, “it’ll be to
Smith.” He’s always been
Lumbly.
DEAR DICK - I’ve been wat-
ching the movie “The Caine
Mutiny,!’,.with Humphrey
Bogart and Van Johnson. My
question is, how did Van Johnson
get that huge scar across his
forehead and down between his
eyes? you can see it in his color
movies real well. And how’s he
doing today? Mrs. P.D., West
Reading, Pa.
In 1942, Johnson and his friend
Keenan Wynn were driving to a
screening. Their car was broad-
sided at a red light: Johnson’s
head smashed the top of the car.
He had a metal plate inserted in
his skull,and the scars resulted
from that accident. He is doing
fine these days. At the moment,
he is appearing on Broadway in
“La Cage aux Folles.”
