One of the most provoking afflic-
tions which some hunters usually
discover along about this time of
the hunting season is the abom-
inable habit of "flinching.”
Flinching is an elusive nervous
reaction which might well be term-
ed shooting paralysis and this in the air.

"flinch” Is inexplalnablc.
Experienced shooters may go
along for years and then all of a
sudden develop the habit of flinch-
ing without actually knowing why.
It Is difficult to determine accur-
ately the cause of flinching but in
the majority of cases it Is a mis-
fitting stock. The comb can be too
high causing the shooter to take
considerable recoil on his cheek or
the stock may be too long or too
short. All of these causes are eas-
ily corrected.
Fear of recoil la by no means
the only cause of flinching. Ner-
vousness ran easily bring about the
trouble. Onee the shooter starts
flinching he Is prone to build up
his trouble into a mental hazard
which la a great stumbling block
In the road to recovery or over-
coming of this vicious habit.
No sure cure for flinching has
been discovered to my knowledge.
Many so called "anti-flinch gadgets
have been marketed and may work
for some shooters but they still
are a far cry from a cure-all for
flinching.
About the only way to correct
this habit is to practice dry shoot-
ing, lx., swinging an unloaded gun
on a moving target and pulling the
trigger at what would have been
the right time. After several ses-
