Another side of Hollywood:
The sweet-faced, white-haired
little woman walked across the
R-K-0 lot, and she nodded plea-
santly to the red-haired girl in
make-up approaching.
After she had passed, the little
woman turned around.
‘Ginger Rogers,” she said. "1
know because I ironed that dress
It happens this way often, for
Mrs. Katharina B. Ruge, ah al-
terations fitter in the studio’s
wardrobe department. “Altera-
tions fitter” is a rather all-inclu-
sive term, but convenient for
union classification. Mrs. Ruge’s
job includes the general care and
repair of various Items of ward-
robe used by the players. She
mends, sews, alters, washed, ir-
s, cleans, keeps track of thi;
and dyes.
She has been in her “corner"
—a little room, with racks of
dresses, dress forms, an ironing
board, stocking stretchers, a
sink, sewing machines, boxes of
thtead and needles—-for eight
years. More than 60 now, she has
been sewing since she was 17,
has been in studio wardrobe
work 16 years and more.
4 Most of her work now is with
wardrobe for extras, stand-ins,
minor ...players — especially in
comedy and Westerns. In her
“corner” today is a white net
everting gown, sparklingly fresh,
which has been in service, with
constant mending and cleaning
for 10 years.
Mrs. Ruge would recognise
Ginger’s dress, though not Gin-
ger. because she has a ’’terrible
memory” for names—“and be-
sides, the make-up makes them
all look different The girts come
in here, and I know them, but
for the life of me I couldn't tell
you their names. Dpcille Ball I
always know, and Anne Shirley
—because they come in to say
hello now and again, and I know
them real well.”
