Over the Killing of Brown by Riddle

Terrell Tex May 9 Another of
those horrifying Incidents that brings
a shudder to a communltj occurred In
Terrell last night It was about llfteen
minutes after 11 when nearly cery
person In Terrell was aroused from
slumber by the rapid tiring of several
shots In quick succession It proved to
be the mortal wounding of a home
dealer In the city by the name ot BUI
It Brown shot by John U Hlddle at
this city both well known lir Riddle
states that ho had been to Kaufman
nnd returned home and Just before
reaching tho house ho noticed n dark
object concealed behind tho southwest
corner post ot tho yard fence Ho did
not enter the front gate as usual but
went down the alley before rrnchlnc
the gate nnd entered tho jard through
tin opening in the fence at tho rear of
the house No sooner had he started
for tho porch than ho noticed n man
standing In tho jnrd In the Hindu of a
tree near the doorway that led up-
stairs After entering1 the house and
stcurlnff his shotgun he stood behind
a porch coered with lnen nnd de-
manded ot the Intruder why ho wan
there The Intruder made three steps
forward and to the left tn get Riddle
in range at the name tlmo drawing
his rlstt1 Riddle stepped behind the
post and opened fire to knock tho pis-
tol from his hand and his tlri was re-
turned by Brown who proved to be
tho Intruder who turned and ran from
tho > ard He got throush the west
gate and fell a few feet be > ond and
then rising ran ngnln nnd fell on the
south side of Nash nvenue in front of
the south gate of the Riddle residence
Brown was found to be wounded with
buckshot in the abdomen moit severe-
ly nnd was also wounded In the right
hand groins right nnd left thighs He
was carried to tho Harris house where
he died about nn hour nfler being
wounQed and stated before dvlng that
J B Riddle shot him Ills relative nt
Athens were telegraphel to nnd his
brother answered that ho would tome
on thi first train
Mr Riddle does not deny that he shot
Brown but claims thnt he did it In
selfdefense and furthor rtated that for
some time pant there had been personal
differences between them nnd had ex-
pected that Brown would attempt to
assassinate him
Brown was rooming at Mr P C
Clyettos on the opposite side of Nash
avenue and retire 1 earl but after
word got up stating that he left badly
and was going nfter medicine Only a
few moments elapsed until the flrlutf
commenced Brown had a 4eallbro
Colts revolver two barrels of which
lind been freshly emptied
Browns body was taken In charge
by Rage s JeiYerie and embalmed to
bo hell until tomorrow when It Is ex-
pected the funeral will take place He
was a member of Greenville lodge of
Knights of Pythias and a large dele-
gation from that lodge Is expected to
be present at the funeral services
Marshal Joe Keller has Mr Riddle
under arrest and It has been said that
ho will have his examining trial tomor
row The affair has cause 1 considera
ble gloom over the entire city as both
parties were well knewn Mr Riddle
nnd family having lived here a great
many years
