had abandoned the Peralta grant un-
til the row arose between Tom Scott of
the Texas Pacific and the Southern
Paclflo magnates Huntington Crocker
and others When Hie railroad light
developed and Scott bent the Southern
Pacific out of Us land grant Reavls
thought his papers in the Pcralta
grant might be ot some advantage lo
the Southern Pacific He goMhem out
of his trunk for the first time In sev-
eral years He showed them first tu
W W Stow the well known poli-
tician law > er of the raclflc slope Stow
confirmed his Impression that ho had
something the Southern Pacific woull
like to get Stow provided a way
whereby the papers and Reavis reached
the Inner circles of the Southern Pa-
cific The road made a contract lo
furnish all the money necessary Tor lhe
prosecution of the Peralta claim In re-
turn for which the Southern Pacific
was to have half tho grant From that
time Reavls acted under the counsel
of the Southern Faclflc He discovered
Jn 1893 that the will and deeds were
spurious Yet In March 194 he filed
the claim to the grant based on the
Willing deed
Reavls said he did not tell the
Southern racifle lawyer that he was
satisfied the deed was spurious but
did give him the name of Miguel Pe
ralta as one who knew more about the
deed than any living man He urged
the Southern Pacific lawyer to send for
Miguel Peralta and get his statement
but the lawyer did not tako his advice
and so the claim was filed and pushed
on the basis ot the Willing deed
Reavls said he came to believe that
Dr W W Oltt of St Louis could tell
more than any one elso about the fab-
rication of the Willing papers Elabor-
ating his testimony of the Interests of
the Southern Pacific In pushing the
grant under the Willing deed Reavls
said When I pressed for a decision on the
claim by the surveyor general or Arl
cona I did so because I was acting
under the direction of counsel I differ-
ed from counsel on the question of Die
withdrawal of the lands within this
giant from the public domain I never
wished to cast a cloud on tilled land In
that territory
