TOO MUCH WARNING?
As late as the 1980s, most tornadoes in the United
States would strike several minutes before a warning
was issued, and many would hit with no warning at
all. Now there is an average 13 minutes of warning
before a tornado strikes. But in the May 31 Okla-
homa City tornado event, up to 30 minutes of
warning persuaded some residents to get in their
cars and flee the city, causing a massive traffic jam.
In this case, individual decisions made with a
30-minute warning could have been even more
disastrous had the massive tornado passed over the
gridlocked interstate system the bisects Oklahoma
City.

Traffic stop leads to arrests
A routine traffic stop for an
expired registration sticker re-
sulted in the arrests of two men
Friday night.
When the Denton police offi-
cer made the stop off South
Loop 288, she reported smelling
what she believed to be marijua-
na smoke inside the vehicle.
The officer ran checks on
both the driver and passenger,
and the passenger had out-
standing warrants, according to
a police report. During the pas-
senger’s arrest, police reported
finding two cans of beer next to
the passenger seat. The cans —
one half empty and one almost
full — were both cold, according
to the report.
Police said the passenger ad-
mitted that one of the beers
belonged to him and the driver
said the other was his. When the
passenger got out of the vehicle,
the officer observed he had a
work ID along with white ashes
in his lap.
After conducting a probable
cause search, a small, clear plastic
bag containing marijuana was
discovered between the driver’s
seat and the center console, along
with a small marijuana cigarette,
the report stated. The officer also
found a cigarette box in the vehi-
cle glove box containing money
and another marijuana cigarette,
the report stated.
The driver and passenger
were charged with possession of
drug paraphernalia and open al-
cohol containers in a vehicle,
and the passenger was also
brought in on the outstanding
warrants, police said.

Police: Fired worker
returns, kills barber
Dallas police said a worker
fired by a barber shop owner has
been accused of returning and
killing his boss.
Dallas County jail records
showed 30-year-old Charles
Dewayne Hooks was being held
Saturday on a murder charge.
Online jail records did not list an
attorney for Hooks, whose bond
was set at $250,000.
Sr. Cpl. Melinda Gutierrez on
Saturday identified the victim as
29-year-old Alejandro Fernan-
dez.
Gutierrez said Fernandez
had fired Hooks on Friday. The
suspect later returned to the
shop and allegedly shot the bar-
ber, then fled. The victim died
later at a Dallas hospital. Police
arrested Hooks a few blocks
away.
Further details weren’t im-
mediately released on what led
to the suspect’s dismissal.
