weather, football games, PTA-
PTO meetings, and so on,
October is supposed to bring us
the end of daylight saving time,
and ghosts and spectres for
kiddoes at Halloween. But to
some of the old timers (don’t
ask if that includes us) this
October has a particular ghost,
which everyone hopes does not
appear. For it was 50 years ago
the end of the month that the
famous stockmarket crash of
’29 hit the nation. The country
was a long time getting over it,
and in the meantime a lot of

be held October 16 and October
23, 1979 at City Hall.

writing your own column is
that you can say pretty much
what you like, so long as it isn’t
slanderous, libelous, obscene,
obnoxious, offensive, etc.
(From a couple of letters we’ve
received we must have touched
on at least one of these
recently). At any rate we’re
going to use this privilege for a
personal message—you see,
when you have a grandaughter
that sorta has you wrapped
around her little finger (don’t
they all?), and when it’s her
11th birthday; and when she
kinda likes to see her name in
the paper; well you just can’t
ignore things and pass up the
chance to say in print “Happy
Birthday, Kelly”.

tells us he recently read where
a woman, age 26, has been
named commander of an
American Coast Guard ship,
with a crew of 14 men. He says
he can hardly wait for the book
about her—Miss Roberts.

Obituary
Edward W.
Carter
Edward W. Carter, 44,
former resident of Odem, died
Thursday in an Aransas Pass
hospital after a short illness.
He was a pipefitter with the
Chicago Bridge and Iron
Company, and a native of
Leesville, Texas, residing in
Odem until moving to Aransas
Pass recently.
Surviving are his wife,
Norma Jean; one son, Edward
W. Carter III; two daughters,
Dorothea Lorene Carter and
Charmaine Renee Carter, all of
Aransas Pass; his father,
George G. Carter, Odem; three
sisters, Mrs. Rhoda Kirchman,
Odem, Mrs. Georgia Mae
Goodbread, Brunswick, Ga.,
and Mrs. Ann Sonier, Houston.
Funeral services will be
conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at
(he Goodwin Funeral Chapel,
Sinton, with interment at the
Evergreen Cemetery, Odem.
Cecil Whiteley enjoyed
visiting Wednesday and
Thursday in the home of her
niece, Mr. and Mrs. Harold
Dennis of Corpus Christi.

Drainage District will accept

1980, V-8, heavy duty, one-half
ton pickup for use by the

PTO Holds Meeting;
Makes Plans For’79-’80
The Parent Teacher
Organization held its first
meeting Tuesday, Oct. 2, at
7:00 p.m. in the school
cafeteria.
President Forrest Jones
presided over the meeting and
gave a brief summary of
proposals for the PTO 1979-80
school year. The proposals
included a donation of $250 to
the RIF program; the spring
bicycle rodeo for elementary
school students; a $400 dollar
donation to the Jr. High School
for construction of concrete
benches around the campus;
two financial scholarships for
the high school; with leftover
funds to go the environmental
playground, planned for the
new elementary school.
These proposals will be voted
on at the next meeting, which
will be held Tuesday, Nov. 6.
Parents must be a member to
vote.
The large number of
members who attended
Tuesday’s meeting, discussed
the fund raising programs.
Permission slips will be sent
out to students so that they
may participate in fund raising
projects. The club will sell pen
and pencils at $1.50 per pack
from Oct. 24 through Nov. 6.
Parents are urged to sign up
at each meeting under the
class which they are
representing. The class with
the most participating
members at each meeting
throughout the year will be
rewarded at the end of the 1979-
80 school vear.
C. L. West, superintendent of
the local schools gave a brief
welcome and urged parents to
attend each meeting.
Refreshments were then
served and the meeting
adjourned.
AARP To Meet
The Sinton AARP will have a
regular meeting Thursday,
October 11, at 7 p.m. in the
Methodist Fellowship Hall.
All members are urged to
attend because the new slate of
officers will be announced and
nominations will be accepted
from the floor.
Mr. W. J. Jolley was released
Thursday from the Spohn
Hospital. He is resting at his
home.
Mrs. A. B. Austin and Mrs.
Ray Miller attended to
business in Corpus Christi
Wednesday.
