The announcement made yesterday
In St Louis adlcis that the Cotton
Helt had withdrawn Its notice of leav-
ing the Southwestern Pansenger asso-
ciation was received bero as mean-
ing a probable adjustment of the
troubled that seem to beset the South-
western passenger committee
Local Cotton Kelt people say the
action of their line should not be con-
strued as yielding anything in the
matter In controversy but rather a
desire to afford ample opportunity for
decision ns to the Justice of their
clalmA without any appearance of a
disposition to force measures V hlle
the demands of the Cotton licit have
been submitted to the consideration of
a special commltce there is no fore-
shadowing the action of that bod A
local passenger man eald yesterday
that the Cotton Holt would not carry
their point and he considered the sit-
uation yet a very grave one
The other lines cannot afford he
said to rob themselves of business
by thus placing a premium on busi-
ness to po over the Cotton I3elt The
Idea la perfectly absurd
And et it Is generally believed that
the only method of averting trouble
U to accede In some measure to the
Cotton Belts terms At any rate It
looks as If trouble will ensue In either
event and It will require the finest
of handling to bring the complicated
affairs that exist Into a state that
will be acceptable to all Interests I ur
ther advices from St Louis are
awaited with much Interest
