HOUSTON (AP)—Willie
Stargell, who recently ex-
pressed a desire to play first
base full-time-, is getting his
wish.—-......-----------
the additional running just to
get to the outfield between
innings, has cut down on his
effectiveness as a player.
The soft-spoken Stargell qui-
Pittsburgh Pirates Manager etly indicated that Virdon
Bill Virdon-said Wednesday
night that Stargell would re-
main at first, rather than left
field, the rest of the season.
"I feel Willie doesn't hit as
well playing left field as he
does first base,” said Virdon,
and we’ve got to have his bat
in the lineup.”
Virdon said former first
baseihan Bob Robertson and
Richie Hebner will platoon at
third base-, where Hebner was
the starter until he suffered a
back injury several days ago.
Stargell, who has undergone
three operations on his knees,
one after the 1971 season, had
woulcTsooner or later have to
face a decision on the matter,
includir.0 the possibility - of
trading hii
However, Stargell gave no
ultimatum, and Virdon has
'stated since the season began
that he understood the problem
facing his top home run hitter.
Virdon safd Gene Clines and
Vic Davalillo will split duty in
left field forthe rest of the sea-
son.
