Sterling and Robert E. Lee
landed 15 of the 24 spots Wed-
nesday in the annual Baytown
Sun All-District 20-AAAA foot-
ball team, chosen in secret bal-
lot by league coaches and
writers who cover the loop.
Sterling put four on the of-
fensive team and four on the
defensive unit, with punter
Steve Hughes making the team
as a specialist. The Rangers,
who advanced to the state
quarter-finals after sharing
the league crown with Lee,
also had the co-player of the
year in defensive back Howard
Sampson.
The Ganders had two
players on offense and
four more on defense. Offen-
sive-defensive tackle Ernest
Salzar joined Sampson as
the co-player of the year and
Coach Ron Kramer was named

Salazar was the only two-
way pick
Although Walmsley’s posi-
tion was wingback, his pri-
mary role was that of a recei-
ver. Coaches and writers
thought his performance meri-
ted a receiver position. For the
year, he caught 19 passes for
322 yards
Rounding out the offensive
team were receiver Keith
Nelms of Smiley, linemen Wal-
ter Ivins of Galena Park and
David Schultz of MacArthur
and running backs Dwayne
linebacker and Michael Wil-
liams of Forest Brook in the
secondary.
The tightest race from start
to finish came at the quarter-
back position, where Lemond
edged REL’s Jimmy Crouse
for the honor. While most posi-
tions on the team were clearly
settled by early votes, the
man-under slot wasn’t decided
until the final two ballots had
been received.
One tie did exist. Jameson
and Chevalier each received
five votes for the final spot in
the defensive line.
Kramer was honored for his
expert guidance during the
1973 season. His team was
picked as low as sixth in pre-
season ratings, but finished 8-

fending champion Sterling.
