Sunday Night's
Jazz’Service'
Stirs Methodists
j DENTON (AP) - Thevre atill
talking here, man, about that Sun-
day night Jan at the Pint Metho-
dist Church.
Church officials, man, said the
reaction was favorable.
Not a square in the congrega-
tion, man.
The 10-minute score for John
Wesley's standard prayer service,
man, wa* arranged by Ed Sum-
merlin, a graduate student at
North Texas State College here.
Summerlin presently is appearing
| with a dance band at a leading
Dallas hotel.
Saxophones, trumpets, trom-
bones, and drums echoed through
the building that before had heard
only voice, piano and organ.
Why. Dad, except lor two hymns
the score—the whole thing—was
Summerlin's own jazz composi-
tion. He didn't change the tempo
I of the hymns, man, he just wrote
smooth, hep new harmonies.
I The music was played by Sum-
merlin and some other North Tex-
as Slate cats, the moaning sax,
the crying trumpets, and slip-
Ihoms. It went right on, man, right
on through the entire service, ex
cept for a 29-mmute semior
preached by William B. Slack Jr,
and, man, he's a former televi-
sion actor and the assistant pas-
tier at this church.
Presiding over the whole set-up.
man, was Dr. Roger Ortmayer, a
member of the faculty in Dallas
of Southern Methodist University's
Perkins School of Theology.
TTiat's not all. man. In August,*
the jazz service will go to Purdue
I University, Lafayette, Ind., for the
[National Youth Convocation.
And you know, Dad, Summerlin
said the National Broadcasting
Co. already has made arrange-
ments to film parts of the Purdue
I sendee for telecasting.

History tells us he was a foot-

IIs credited with discovering Man-

The controversy started when
[the state decided to do him honor,
lit was suggested that the Bridge

I bear his name.
There wasn't peep from Brook
lyn. But many Staten Island rest
dents were outraged. They felt the
bridge should be called Staten
Island Bridge, and the Staten
[Island Chamber of Commerce
Iagreed.
I Indignantly these people will
point out to anyone who’ll listen
that Verrazano, who sailed for the
[French, was an out-and-out pirate.
As far as they're concerned,
there's a Staten Island ferryboat
named after him, and that's me-
morial enough.
One outspoken Staten Islander
described Verrazano as nothing
more than “a foreigner who
made a navigational mistake.”
However, the same description
could be applied to Christopher
Columbus.
