HayesJSays Rockets ‘Not Bad’
NEW YORK (AP) - Elvin
Hayes wants to let people know
the Houston Rockets are not
bad team and they haven’t giv-
en up.
The 6-foot-9tt center speaks
softly, however, letting ex-
perience and hope take the
sting out of a disappointing Na-
tional Basketball Association
season.
This year there’s a lot of
new faces,” said “The Big E,"
following a 110-100 loss to the
New York Knicks Wednesday
gather. We will, we will.
The Rockets jumped ahead of
a the Knicks in the first half and
held the lead until just over*
minute remained. What lost
that lead, said Hayes, is lack
experience.
"When you’re in a hole, you
fight to get out,” said Hayes.
"And that’s what we’re doing,
we’re fighting. But we’re pres-
suring ourselves and tiring Ni
ourslves out. That’s what we
did against the Knicks.

and I know we’re going to do
all right.
"I think we’ll be there next
year,
Last season the Rockets won
of 40 games, but this season under
new head coach Tex Winter,
they have Just 24 victories after
63 games. '
Hayes’ play, including 26
points and 14 rebounds against
New York, has sparkled. But
the Rockets have been hurt by
lack of experience.
"When you win, everything is

said. "We Just keep bowing and
bowing, waiting to get it togeth-
er.”
The Knicks’ Walt Frazier hit
17 points in -the first half to
keep the New Yorkers in a
game in which they missed
their first nine shots from the
floor. In the second half, he
added 11 points.
Teammate Earl- Monroe
scored 18 points,playing less
than half the game, and Bill
Bradley hit for 16.
