Plan Series
Of Movies
Members of the Catholic
Youth Organization will pre-
sent a full-length movie,
first in a series for the
summer, at the Holy Fam-
ily Hall (youth Hall) of Our
Lady of Mercy Catholic
Church, Sunday, June 22.
The first showing will be
at 2 p.m. and a second
showing at 8 p.m. Admis-
sion will be 35 cents per
students and 50 cents for
adults. The CYO Fiestas
Patrias Queen candidate,
Gloria Chapa, will operate
a concession stand.
CYO members invite the
public and ask that “you
support us with this project,
to have entertainment for
youth and adults this sum-
mer,”
The next movie is sched-
uled for July 6.
Training For
Pfc. Garza
Private First Class Rey-
es Garza, 21, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Juan G. Garza,
Mercedes, completed an
electronics course June 6
at the Army Signal School,
Ft. Monmouth, N. J.
During the course, Pfc.
Garza was trained to oper-
ate and maintain various
kinds of Army electronic
equipment.
Pfc. Garza entered the
Army in April 1968 and
completed basic training at
Ft. Bliss, Tex.
He was graduated from
Mercedes high school in
1967.
Baseball Clinic
Planned Here
Bural Etheredge and Bud-
dy Roberts of Harlingen,
baseball stars at New Mex-
ico Highlands University,
will offer a baseball clinic
for boys 8 through 16 June
23 to 29 at John F. Kennedy
City Park in Mercedes. Par-
ticipants may register at
Salinas Food Store, making
a $10 deposit per boy and
paying $15 on opening day
of the clinic.
Etheredge and Roberts,
both NAIA All-Americans,
will give individual instruc-
tions in batting, fielding,
base-running, pitching and
all aspects of the game.
Tullises On
Mexico Trip
Mr. and Mrs. Woody Tul-
lis, on vacation travel in
Mexico, spent a few days
last week in Mazatlan. In a
card from Hotel De Cima
they reported they never
have seen “such a beauteous
and peaceful sea city’*.
Vietnam Duty
For Pfc. Canales
Army Private First Class
Rigo Canales, a 1968 grad-
uate of Edcouch-Elsa high
school, was assigned May
22 to Company B, 2d Bat-
talion of the 1st Infantry
Division’s 28th Infantry in
Vietnam. He is a rifleman.
A. Noriega
Rites Here
Funeral Mass for Ar-
nulfo A, Noriega, 65, was
Monday, June 14, at Our
Lady of Mercy with the Rev.
Hugo Van den Bussche,
OMI, assistant pastor, of-
ficiating. Burial followed
at the Catholic Cemetery.
Garcia-Trevino Funeral
Home was in charge of ar-
rangements.
Mr. Noriega died June 14
at Knapp Memorial Metho-
dist Hospital. A rosary was
said Sunday at 8 p.m. at
Garcia-Trevino chapel.
Survivors include two
brothers, Federico, Mata-
moros; Guadalupe, Merce-
des; two sisters, Luz N.
January, Mercedes and Ben-
igna N. Rodriguez, Merce-
des.
