Home Being Razed
Brownsville Another landmark in
the development of this border city,
one of the “mansions’’ of the Gay
Ninties era, is being torn down to
make way for a new buiding.
It is the once magnificient home
of the late Dr. Charles Combe, an
outstanding figure in the early
days of Brownsville, ami is being
razed by Carlos Watson, present
owner, who is to construct a busi-
ness building in its place.M The old
home was famed in its days, along
with the old R. B. Ceager home,
which was next to it, and which
has also been razed.
The Combe home once housed
William Jennings Bryan, the great
“Commoner,’’ while the Creagers
home had as its guest the late
Warren G. Harding when he was
president-elect.

Construction of modern new
buildings to house all United States
agencies at the Reynosa-Hidalgo
bridge is now nearing completion
and the structures, built by the Val-
ley Bridge Company, which owns
the bridge, will be occupied in May.

from the El Tanque, Boyle, Guerra,
Rio Grande City, Ricaby and Barba-

ty Encampment was a three-day-
and-night affair, held in the Old
Llano Grande Club House, each

and remaining for the entire three-
day sesssion. Club Histories dis-
close that entertainment at one of
the first meetings consisted of a
real Bull Fight staged in a pasture
adjoining the Club House. Several
members of the original clubs will
be honored during the one-day En-
campment in Donna,
Mrs. Edith Puckett, Weslaco, Pro-
gram chairman is arranging the pro-
gram which will start at ten A. M.
immediately following ’the one hour
registration period under the chair-
manship of Mrs. J. M. Leadbetter of
Edinburg. Visitors will be admitted
free while a r,en cent registration
fee wil be charged all members

Auditor B. F. McKee stopped pay-
ing the expenses on Jan. 1, then
asked Attorney General Gerald
Mann when new census figures be-
came official and operative in ca-
ses involving population changes.
Mann ruled that the new census to-
tals became operative on June 22,
1940. Then McKee demanded repay-
ment of the expense allowances, but
the commissioners refused, They
have now agreed to repay the full a-
mounts, $363.34 each.

Valley Pipe Line
Sold to W. R. Davis
M-cALLEN, Tex., May 17.—Par-
chase of the Valley Pipeine Compa-
ny’s five-inch oil line connecting
most of the major oil fields of the
Lower Rio Grande Va’ley with port
Isabel and Port Brownsville by W.
B. Davis, Inc., of Houston was an-
nounced Thursday by the Davis
concern in Houston.
No consideration was announced,
but the properties have an estimated
value of $700,000 to $800,000.
Davis officials in Houston said the
175-mile line would eventually be
enlarged to an 8-inch line, thus in-
creasing its carrying capacity, and
that other improvement of about
$1,500,000 by the Davis concern in
the line.
The Valley line will be merged
with other pipeline interests of the
Davis concern in Houston and will
be managed by P. B. Watson of
Houston, it was announced.
H. H. Hensley, general manager
of the Valley firm since construction
of the line several years ago by
Frank T, Murchison and others of
San Antonio, ,said he could make no
comment on the sale1 of the pro-
perty, which became effective May
1.
The present line orginally mov-
ed oil from the Samfordyce, North
in southwestrn Hidalgo County. It
