Resigns Position
Miss Olga Arteaga, as-
sistant city secretary here
and a City Hall employee
the past three and one-half
years, has resigned, effec-
tive September 15. She
plans to enroll at Pan Am-
erican College to major in
government.
A 1965 graduate of Mer-
cedes high school, she is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Albert Arteaga,
About twenty miles south
of Jerusalem is one of the
oldest cities in the world,
Hebron. Abraham came
here during his wanderings.
Here his wife, Sarah, died.
From the Hittites he pur-
chased the cave of Machpe-
lah to bury her. Here he
is also buried, as well as
Isaac and Rebekah, Jacob
and Leah.
Over this cave, Herod
built a great fortress. This
was the Herod who was king
of Judea when Jesus was
born. Some of the stones
used in the construction
weigh more than 70 tons.
Today this fortress is a
Muslim mosque, the Mosque
of El Haran. It is 200 feet
long, 150 feet wide, and 60
feet high. Hebron was tak-
en by the Israelis during
the Six-Day War. Our Jew-
ish guide said that the rea-
son the war was so short
was that the Jews had to
rest on the seventh day, so
for their own protection they
had to get it over!
Hebron is a fanatical Mus-
lim city. So fanatical is it,
that for more than 600 years
no Christian or Jew ever
entered this mosque. We
knew something was amiss
when our group arrived in
Hebron. We had been warn-
ed to stay together. Israeli
troops were everywhere pa-
trolling the streets. They
were stationed on rooftops
watching for any outbreak
of violence. They were
even on the mosque. Groups
of Arab men, numbering up
to one hundred were talking
in low tones. The next day
we learned that just before
our arrival, a native man
of the city, an Arab, had
refused to halt at the com-

mand of an Israeli soldier.
Instead he ran. In firing
at him, two Arab women
were also killed. Thus the
heightening of the tension.
For their own protection,
the Israelis say they must
control all of this southern
area between them and Egy-
pt. Recent events would
tend to bear this out. In
1948 the Egyptian forces
reached the southern out-
skirts of Jerusalem because
this portion was not in Isra-
eli hands. What the people
in Hebron do for a living
there, it is hard to discern.
With the men idle all day,
there is bound to be a popu-
lation explosion. Soon the
Jews will be outnumbered
within the lands they con-
trol.
And now, a "Christian”,
deciding that the Lord need-
ed some help, and that the
Lord Jesus could not come
back to earth until the Tem-
ple had been rebuilt, tried
to burn down the Aska Mos-
que in Jerusalem to clear
space for the Temple! This
has fanned the hatred of the
Arabs making them more
determined to take the old
city of Jerusalem, and oblit-
erate the nation of Israel.
What strange and cruel
things are done in the name
of Him who came to bring
peace on earth. In closing
this travelogue, we can do
no better than to remind
ourselves of that incident
at Caesarea when the Apos-
tle Paul was a prisoner for
the cause of Christ. Thirty
years before that, the Apos-
tle would have killed or put
in prison any person bear-
ing the name of the Gali-
lean. As he pled his case
before King Agrippa, the
king cried out, "You think
it will not take much to win
me over and make a Chris-
tian of me!” "Much or lit-
tle,” said Paul, "I wish to
God that not only you, but
all those also who are lis-
tening to me today, might
become what I am, apart
from these chains.” Mark
the difference. Nov/, Paul
would die to save Agrippa,
but under no circumstance
would he impose a chain.
That is real Christianity.
The sincerity that per-
secutes has missed the way
of Christ. But the sincerl
ity that will go to death to
deliver, but will not shackle
another with a chain, that
is true Christianity. How
we all have missed the truth
and the spirit of this Christ!
