Paula Kay Pemelton was
named Tri-county 4-H rodeo
queen last week at the
youth rodeo in Edinburg
and was also the winner of
the cow milking contest.
Her brothers also took top
honors at the rodeo. James
Pemelton, named best all-
a-round cowboy, won first
in the junior barrel race,
second in junior steer ri-
ding and third in junior
goat scramble. Billy Pe-
melton took first in the sen-
ior goat scramble and third
in the senior barrel race.
ACCORDING TO Post-
master Ben Tucker, mid-
night Thursday will mark
the end of the 3 cent first
class and 6 cent airmail
stamps. New postal rates
demand an increase of 1
cent in the prices of these
stamps.
STUDENTS FROM nine
Valley towns, performing in
groups of eight to seventeen,
were presented in Holmes-
Johnson’s annual ensemble
piano concert July 31 at the
Mercedes High School au-
ditorium.

MRS. PAUL Shotwell was
re-elected president of the
J. A. Garcia Post 172 of
the American Legion Auxi-

THE VOGUE, andtheRae-
Donna Beauty Salon schedul-
ed a formal opening in their
new locations July 31. The
Vogue recently moved to the
Roberts Building on Fourth
and Texas Avenues. It is
owned and operated by Mild-
red Howell and Mrs. Mc-
Micken. The Rae-Donna,
owned by Mrs. Bess Roberts,
is now located in the same
area and although it has
been in operation for se-
veral weeks, formally op-
ened at the same time as the
Vogue.
ACCORDING TO Charlie
Jones, commander of the
J. A. Garcia American Le-
gion Post 172, the Legion
is now to get a permanent
home. The second floor of
the Dominguez Brothers De-
partment Store is to be re-
modeled and used by the le-
gion for its meetings.
AS A RESULT of ill
health, William D. Decker
is withdrawing his candida-
cy for the office of Justice
of the Peace, Precinct 1.
NEXT WEEK the TAAF
Boys Softball Tournament
will be played in Mercedes,
according to Carl Blasig,
assistant TAAF District di-
rector. Teams entering the
competition are Ewing’s of
Mercedes, Kenely Seafood
of Brownsville, Reforma
Motor Co. of McAllen and
similar clubs. Tournament
director will be E. V. Mitch-
ell; publicity director, Ker-
mit Natho, and Fred John-
son and Ben Tucker, offi-
cial score keepers.
SEA SCOUT Ship 59, spon-
sored by the Independent Or-
der of Odd Fellows No. 32,
journeyed to Rio Hondo Sat-
urday where they went boat-
ing, swimming and had a
picnic. Those attending were

good clean fun for Merce-
des”, Florencio Perez is
sponsoring the construction
of an air-conditioned, four-
alley Bowling Center.
ACCORDING TO Leon
Graham, superintendent of
schools, bids will be open
July 23 for a new four-room
grade school for the Mer-
cedes Independent School
District. The new school
will be located one block
south of the Catholic Church
on Vermont, on the block
between Fifth and Sixth
streets.
RETURNING THIS week
from the Firemen’s Basic
Training Course at A & M
College are A. A. Moore,
fire chief, and H. H. Lyche.
MERCEDES CHAPTER of
the Future Farmers of Ame-
rica will be getting an ear-
ly start on their entries for
next year’s Rio Grande Val-
ley Livestock Show as they
have recently returned from
Beeville where they select-
ed their calves, according to
agriculture instructor Cur-
tis Reagan.
THE MERCEDES Public
Library, which started in
1940 with only a few donat-
ed books, is celebrating its
eighth anniversary this
month. An Open House is
slated by the library board
to honor the first presi-
dent, Mrs. Lellah Lyle of
Rayville, La., as well as to
celebrate the library’s an-
niversary.
ELECTED KING and
Queen of the first annual
summer music camp at the
University of Corpus Chris-
ti were Fidencio Garza Jr.
and Susan Edwards, both of
Mercedes.
AT A BUSINESS meeting
Monday night, the American
Legion Post elected the fol-
