ROY'S MINIMAX, AFTER TIIE SUN CAME UP MONDAY — Total destruction
of Roy’s Minimax food store on south Texas was clear to all, including two
unidentified youngsters, after a fire swept through the building in the early
hours Monday. Exact cause of the fire and the extent of dollar damage had not
been determined early in the week. This is frontal view from Texas eastward.

HOW HE CELEBRATED NATIONAL COIN WEEK — Ruben Noriega, above at
his First National Bank coin-wrapping station, displays a mis-minted new pen-
ny he found, coincidentally, during National Coin Week, the last week in April,
while at work. It was a 'finders-keepers', dealas far as the Bank was con-
cerned, just as it was four years ago when Ruben came across a mis-printed
nickel, for which prices started at $200 at that time. Value of the new find has
not been determined.
Master’s Degree Due Peynado
Ascension Peynado of
Mercedes, is one of 1,303
students applying for spring
graduation at Texas A & M
University, announces Ad-
missions Dean H. L. Heaton.
Peynado is seeking a Mas-
ter's degree in plant phys-
iology.
Heaton said 917 students
have filed for baccalaureate
degrees and 386 for ad-
vanced degrees, including
108 Ph.D. candidates.
Winners At Field Day
Seventh and eighth grade
students of Immanuel Luth-
eran School attended annual
Field Day Activities in Aus-
tin on Friday. The acade-
mic and athletic contests
attracted 2,000 Luterhan
students from Texas to the
campus of Concordia Luth-
eran College.
Winners from Mercedes
were Mark Twenhafel, 1st
in 7th grade current events;
Steven Drawe, 1st in 7th
grade basketball shooting;
and Kim Loomans, 3rd in
8th grade current events.
The students left Mer-
cedes Thursday morning
and stopped in San Antonio
to visit San Jqse Mission,
Mission Conception, and the
Alamo. Thursday afternoon
was spent in the Capitol in
AF Sergeant
Paulo Rodriguez, son of
Mrs. Juana G. Rodriguez,
Mercedes, has been promot-
ed to sergeant in the U. S.
Air Force.
Sergeant Rodriguez, an
aircraft mechanic at Ramey
AFB. P. R.f is in a unit of
the Strategic Air Command.
The sergeant, a 1966 grad-
uate of Mercedes high
school, is married to the
former Evangelina Flores
of Fort Worth.

The group returned to
Mercedes Friday evening.
Making the trip were
Judy Erwin, Kim Loomans,
Bonnie Stugard, Steven
Drawe, Kenneth Eilers,
Gary Stugard and Mark
Twenhafel. The students
were accompanied by Jack
Drawe, chairman of the
Board of Parish Education
of Immanuel Lutheran
Church, and Keith A. Loo-
mans, principal of Imman-
uel Lutheran School.
Ribbons To
Four Artists
Four Mercedes high
school art students of Mrs.
Polly Haynes received rib-
bons Sunday at the All-Val-
ley High School Competitive
Art Show in San Benito.
Sponsored by the Harlingen
Art Forum, the competition
covered 12 Valley schools
and exhibition of 395 works
of art in 12 categories.
Alfonso Cano of MHS won
a first-place ribbon for his
sculpture exhibit.
Honorable mentions went
to Gilsie Knapp, in pastels;
Antonio Flandes, in char-
coal, and Ricky Knight, in
tempera.
Club Names
New Officers
Jimmy Greenwood was
elected president of Chan-
sonnettes at a meeting May
3 when members met at his
home. Others to serve with
Jimmy are Mark VanBerg,
first vice president; Mike
Green, second vice pres-
ident; Beth Herndon, sec-
retary; Linda Schwarz,
treasurer; Susan Dillon, re-
porter; Barbara Harris and
Sally Twenhafel, historians.
Mrs. Mary Alice Baingo,
sponsor, installed the offi-
cers.
Committees appointed
were Membership Commit-
tee with Mike Green as
chairman and Barbara Har-
ris; Telephoning Committee,
Susan Dillon, Linda Sch-
warz and Bobbi Kaye Jo-
nes; Program Committee,
Mark VanBerg, chairman,
Ricky Givens, Beth Hern-
don and Marianne Sparrow.
Seniors honored at this
meeting were presented a
song book by the sponsor,
Mrs. Baingo. They were
Larry Schwarz, Gilsie
Knapp, Colma Lentz, Mary
Canty, Teresa Hoverson and
Karen Diehl. Senior mem-
bers unable to be present
were Maureen Hager, Paul
Cotter and Kandyce Lugg.
Teresa Hoverson and Col-
ma Lentz were in charge of
the program, "Switched On
Bach”.
During the business ses-
sion the group discussed a
Valley Chansonnettes Con-
vention to be hosted by the
Mercedes club sometime in
November.
