Electricity
Spotlighted
This is National Electri-
cal Week, a week in which
the nation pays tribute to
electrical pioneers and a
time when public attention
is focused on the contribu-
tions electricity has made
to the economy and way of
life.
The week emphasizes
electricity’s contributions
to society, as reflected in
its continuing theme ‘‘Elec-
tricity Powers Progress”.
Central Power and Light
Company Manager Law-
rence Morrow said the dates
for the week were chosen
to include the anniversary
of Thomas Edison’s birth,
February 11.
“National Electrical Week
gives us an opportunity to
recognize the many ways
that electricity serves us
daily in our homes and on
our jobs to help make our
lives more comfortable and
productive,” the CPL man-
ager said. “The planned
activities during National
Electrical Week are design-
ed to underscore the import-
ant role electricity plays in
our nation’s development.”
Mr. Morrow said that
many times more electrical
progress is predicted dur-
ing the next 10 years than
took place during Edison’s
entire lifetime.
“The electrical indus-
try,” he explained, “is
conscious of its responsi-
bilities to encourage today’s
youth to seek greater know-
ledge, and during National
Electrical Week emphasis
will be placed on programs
designed for youth.”
This National Electrical
Week commemorates the
122nd anniversary of the
birth of Edison, the onetime
newsboy who brought elec-
tricity out of the laboratory
and into practical use for
the benefit of mankind. His
invention of the first prac-
tical incandescent lamp, on
October 21, 1879, started a
new way of life.
