Miss Mary Louis Ever-
ett, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Edward Gething Ever-
ett, of Beeville, became the
bride of Samuel Russell
Graham, son of Dr. and
Mrs. Leon Roy Graham,
5716 Marilyn Drive, Austin,
at 10 a.m. on February 7.
Dr. Bill Glover performed
the double-ring ceremony in
University Methodist Stu-
dent Chapel.
The bride holds a B. A.
degree from the University
of Texas in Austin. The
bridegroom attended both
the University of the South
in Sewanee, Tennessee,
Where he was affiliated with
Phi Delta Theta, and the
University of Texas at Aus-
tin, where he was chairman
of the Cultural Entertain-
ment Committee and a mem-
ber of the Silver Spurs.
Given in marriage by her
father, the bride chose a
pale pink street-length dress
with matching accessories.
She wore an antique lace
mantilla and carried a colo-
nial bouquet of pink rose-
buds centered with an or-
• chid.
Maid of honor was Miss
Diana Davis of Beeville. She
wore a beige street length
dress and carried a colonial
bouquet of pink carnations
centered with dark red
roses. The best man was
the bridegroom’s brother,
Leon Nor rod Graham, of
Dallas. Ushers were George
Madison Berry, Austin; Ste-
ven I. Lee, San Antonio, and
Don Davis, Amarillo.
Following the ceremony,
a champaign breakfast was
held in the East Caneletto
Room of the Gondolier-Ra-
mada Hotel.
After a short wedding trip
the couple will be at home
in Pecos where Mrs. Gra-
ham is a Spanish teacher
in the Pecos Public Schools
and Mr. Graham is employ-
ed by Duval Corporation.
Among the out-of-town
guests were: Mrs. Anna
Mae Likely, Beeville,
grandmother of the bride;
Mrs. Frank Russell Gra-
ham and Mrs. Samuel Hol-
land Norrod, both of Denton,
grandmothers of the bride-
groom; Mrs. J. Fred Ray-
zor, Denton, and Mrs. C.
Ray Graham, Garland, aunts
of the bridegroom.

bons from the Donna Lamb

month.

Diane Roman, won a first
place ribbon; Debbie Bras-
hear, third, and Jill Pow-
ers, first.
In the canning division
Diane Roman won third. In
the sewing division Jill Pow-
ers and Diane Roman won
first place ribbons.
Debbie Brashear won a
second place ribbon in the
Home Improvement divi-
sion.
In the Arts and Crafts di-
vision, Alice Green won
third; Johnnie Lee Williams,
first; Diane Roman, first'
and Jill Powers second.

girls cooking division were

Guild Meets
Members of Mary Martha
Guild of Immanuel Lutheran
Church met February 5 in
the parish hall. The group
sang ‘Oh Zion, Haste, Thy
Mission High Fulfilling”,
accompanied by Mrs. Geo-
rge Erchinger at the piano,
followed by scripture read-
ing and prayer, led by Mrs.
Emmett Albright. She also
presented the topic study,
‘Mission Beyond Oursel-
ves”.
Mrs. Velma Karle, pres-
ident, presided during the
business session, where
dates of events were an-
nounced and committees
named.
The group pledged $25 to
the Mercedes Memorial Li-
brary Building Fund.
The next meeting, a ‘Ser-
vice of Praise and Prayer*,
will be March 4 with Mrs.
Robert Eilers as program
leader and Mrs. Keith Loo-
mans as Christian Growth
Chairman. All ladies are
invited to attend this lenten
meditation.

The social committee of
Beta Sigma Phi entertained
members Monday with a
spaghetti supper in the home
of Mrs. E. A. Twenhafel.
Tables for six were set
up with checked cloths and
Italian candles.
During the business ses-
sion, Mrs. Billy Paul Green,
president, appointed Mrs.
R. P. Edgemon, Mrs. E. A.
T wenhafel, Mrs. Carl Moore
and Mrs. Chester Cotter as
the nominating committee.
The program, a costume
party, had each girl select-
ing her costume from a
closed paper sack. Kids
games were played with the
even team winning the most
games. Prizes were Val-
entine suckers.
Mrs. Vincent Neuhaus was
declared the ‘hippie* win-
ner and presented her prize
to Mrs. Green, who brought
the costume.

ter, Dora, to Gilbert H.

The couple will be mar-
ried April 6 at El Princi-
pe de Paz Presbyterian
Church of Mercedes.
The prospective bride-
groom is presently sta-
tioned in Vietnam with the
U. S. Navy.
Epsilon Psi chapter of Ep-
silon Sigma Alpha met for
its regular business session
February 10 at the home of
Miss Opal Jo Davison.
A letter of thanks was read
from the Memorial Old
Folks Home in Weslaco for
the citrus fruit that had been
taken to them for Christ-
mas, All were reminded of
the cancer film to be shown
February 18 in the Magic
Valley Electric Co-op Au-
ditorium at 8 p.m.
Welfare chairman, Miss
Davison reported buying
groceries for a needy fam-
ily, and also taking some
citrus fruit to the Memorial
Old Folks Home last week.
Motion was made and car-
ried to donate $25 to the
Mercedes Library Building
Fund. A rush party was
discussed for next month.
Miss Davison served re-
freshments to Mrs. Jerry
Harville, Mrs. Cesar Ba-
zar, Mrs. Don Bearden, Mrs.
Donald Anderson, Mrs. Bill
Downing, Mrs. Walter Jen-
sen, Mrs. L. E. Taylor,
Miss Vera Barry, Miss Ur-
sula Brauer and Mrs. Scott
Downing.
TO MARRY — Mrs.
Gloria Ramirez an-
nounces the engage-
ment of her daughter,
Gloria, above, to Jose
Antonio Abrego of Mer-
cedes. The couple will
be married March 15
at the Church of the
Nazarene of Mercedes.
He is the son of the
late Mr. and Mrs. Nie-
ves Abrego.
Catholic Women Discuss
Apostleship of Prayer
Latest meeting of the
local Council of Catholic
Women was Monday, Feb-
ruary 3, at Holy Family
Hall. The Rev. James M.
Lyons, O. M. I., opened the
session with prayer.
Father Lyons gave a talk
on the Apostleship of Pray-
er Program, telling the
group what they have done
in the past and what they
hope to accomplish.
Mrs. Gene Raulie told the
group of a retreat for wo-
men to be at the San Juan
Retreat House, February 15
and 16.
Mrs. Jerry Vandersnick
announced the Council of
Catholic Women Conven-
tion to be April 13 at the
Echo Hotel in Edinburg.
Mrs. Joe Reyna, director
of Apostleship, adjourned the
meeting with the ‘prayer of
Local Group
At Rally
A total of 95 were in
attendance at the spring ral-
ly of the Lutheran Women’s
Missionary League of Rio
Grande Valley Zone Febru-
ary 9 in San Benito. Six-
teen attended from Merce-
des.
The Rev. O. E. Naumann
of McAllen conducted the
opening devotion followed by
the LWML hymn and the
pledge in unison.
Presiding at the rally was
Mrs. L. F. Westermann of
Harlingen, zone president.
Mrs. Oscar Thieme of San
Benito gave the welcome and
Mrs, Ben Walfenbarger of
Brownsville gave the re-
sponse and an invitation for
the fall rally to be in
Brownsville in September.
For the roll call of socie-
ties, the San Benito ladies
had 85% present, winning
the gavel, Mary Martha
Guild had 70% present and
Dorcas Air had 45%.
Harlingen Youth present-
ed the program, a skit, ‘‘The
Widow’s Might”.
Plans were also outlined
for the LWML Christian
Growth Worship to be April
13 in Mercedes. It was
voted to give the offering to
the Mission in Reynosa.
Mrs. Yvonne Swanson was
elected delegate to the In-
ternational Convention July
20-23 in Houston. Mrs.
Howard Davis was elected
alternate.
Mrs. Wayne Long of Mon-
ahom, LWML district pres-
ident, spoke to the assembly
after the business meeting.

Earlier during the day,
the local organization mem-
bers were hostesses for the
Diocean Council Board of
Directors meeting. Pre-
sent for this meeting were

talked on retreats and His
Excellency Bishop Hum-
berto S. Medieros, who talk-
ed on ‘a meaningful liturgy*.
There were 35 members
present.
AT HOME IN FAYETTVILLE— Pfc and Mrs. Saul
Martell, above, are at home in Fayettville, N. C.,
where he is stationed with the U. S. Army 28th Sur-
gical Hospital. The couple were married December
15 at San Martin de Porras Catholic of Weslaco.
Mrs. Martell, the former Miss Susan Caribay, is
the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Candido Colon of
Weslaco. Mr. Martell is the son of Mrs. Celia
Martell of Mercedes.

for Girls, at the Masonic
Lodge in Mercedes. She is
