OES Visitors
Introduced
The Order of the Eastern
Star met in the Masonic
Temple Monday evening,
January 13, with Mr. and
Mrs. Paul C. Schrank,
worthy patron and worthy
matron, presiding in the
East.
Introduced in the West
were Mrs. Belle Hale, mem-
ber of the Time and Talent
Committee, Grand Chapter
of Texas, and Mrs. Cathy
Day, member of the Visita-
tion Committee of the Grand
Chapter of Texas. Also in-
troduced was Mrs. Nita
Wertz, worthy matron, Ray-
mondville.
Then Mrs. Schrank intro-
duced her brother and wife,
Mr. and Mrs. John M. Spil-
man, Raymond ville, John
Hale, Raymondville and
other visitors who are
residing in Mercedes, Mrs.
Kathleen Schaudies, Sinton,
Mrs. Florence Swanger,
Minnesota, and Mrs. Geor-
gia Calhoun, El Paso.
After a short business
meeting, the program was
turned over to Mrs. Hale
who gave a colored chalk
talk, a lighted demonstra-
tion with illuminated picture
from the Bible. She was
accompanied by music
played by Mrs. Amelia Sch-
mucker, organist. After-
wards, but in connention with
the lighted picture, while
the hall was in darkness,
Mrs. Leslie Barnes sang
“In the Garden”.
Refreshments of assort-
ed sandwiches and hot spiced
punch were served by Mrs.
Day and Mr. and Mrs. Sch-
rank to 28 members and
guests.

USS Davis
Seaman Gilbert H. Jan-
uary, USN, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Modesto January Jr.
of Mercedes, is serving
aboard the destroyer USS
Davis at sea off the coast
of Vietnam.
His ship has been pro-
viding Naval Gunfire sup-
port to Allied forces in the
five northermost provinces
of South Vietnam. The des-
troyer has been credited
with one enemy killed, one
bridge span destroyed, one
large concrete building des-
troyed, 11 structures des-
troyed or damaged and
seven bunkers destroyed or
damaged.
Operating in the five
northernmost provinces for
a week, the destroyer also
fired on targets some 10
miles south of Danang.

Tiger bandsmen are proud
of the freshmen musicians
who earned positions in the
All-Valley Ninth Grade Band
Saturday. Robert Sisk and
Nora Stewart placed second
and twelfth chairs, respec-
tively, in the clarinet sec-
tion. Linda Schwarz is
fourth chair in the flute
section.
All Valley Ninth Grade
Band activities include an
all-day clinic at which time,
under direction of a guest
conductor, the band will
sightread various musical
compositions.

MID-TERM tests are here
again. Along with these
tests come term papers and
an assortment of long range
projects. As soon as the
first term is completed,
there will probably be more
semester projects which
students will begin the day
before the assignment is
due. Ah, well . . .

QUILL AND Scroll, an
honorary society for high
school journalists, is re-
ceiving new members now.
Tiger staffers who will be
included are juniors Mark
Hartnell, business manager;
Betti Sisk, editor, and Bob-
bi Kaye Jones, assistant
editor. Senior members
from the Tiger staff will be
Sylvia Presas, club editor,
and San Juanita Barroso,
advertising manager.

week to discuss the up-com-
ing Y-Teen sweetheart ban-
quet. After setting the date,
February 15, members
nominated candidates for
Y-Teen Sweetheart. Voting
will be completed at a later
meeting and the Sweetheart
will be announced at the
banquet.

Thespians and members
of the speech and debate
classes journeyed to San
Benito Saturday for UIL Lit-
erary Competition.
Although Mercedes did
not place in any of the
events, they competed in
prose reading, poetry, de-
bate, impromptu and per-
suasive speaking..
Entrants from Mercedes
were Bobbi Kaye Jones,
Stephen Canty, Brad Jones,
Eddie Erwin, Ruth Ann
Crenshaw, Josie Avila, Te-
resa Hoverson, Mark Van-
Berg, Beth Ferguson, Pete
Garcia, San Juanita Salas
and Bobby Van Burkleo.

Promotion
For Gomez
In Vietnam
Pedro Gomez, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Guadalupe Gomez,
Mercedes, was promoted
December 23 to Army spe-
cialist four in Vietnam,
where he is serving with the
4th Infantry Divisiion.
A rifleman in Company B,
3rd Battalion of the divi-
sion's 12th Infantry near
Pleiku, Spec. Gomez enter-
ed the Army in February
1968, completed basic train-
ing at Ft. Polk, La., and
was stationed at Ft. Ben-
ning, Ga., before arriving
in Vietnam last August.
The 21-year-old soldier
graduated from Mercedes
high school in 1967.
George Garcia
In War Zone
Army Specialist Four
George Garcia, 22, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Esmerehildo
Garcia, Elsa, was assigned
to the 25th Support and
T ransportation Battalion in
Vietnam December 11. He
is a military policeman.
Private Canas
On War Duty
Army Private First Class
Pablo Canas Jr., 20, whose
parents live in Mercedes,
was assigned to the 4th In-
fantry Division December 5
near Pleiku, Vietnam. He is
a rifleman.

TROL AND IMPROVEMENT
DISTRICT NO. 9
ORDER CALLING FOR BIDS
FOR A DEPOSITORY
Be it ordered by the
Board of Directors of Hidal-
go and Cameron Counties
Water Control and Improve-
ment District No. 9 that
sealed bids for the deposi-
tory of said District for the
years 1969 and 1970, and
until its successor has been
duly designated and qualified
are hereby called to be sub-
mitted by all institutions,
etc., desiring to bid on same
on or before 10:00 a.m. on
February 3, 1969, in accor-
dance with the following pro-
visions, namely:
(a) Such bids shall be in
writing addressed to the
Board of Directors of the
District and shall be receiv-
ed in the office of the Dis-
trict or through the United
States mail by the Board of
Directors at or before 10:00
o’clock a.m. on Monday,
February 3, 1969.
(b) Such bids shall be on
the basis of interest to be
paid on time deposits on the
various existing accounts of
the District, or new ac-
counts established during
the contract period, and also
the interest rate to be char-
ged by the bank to the Dis-
trict on loans to the District
made within the contract
period.
(c) The District may re-
ject any and all bids.
(d) The successful bidder
shall forthwith pledge to the
District with a trustee to be
designated by it, such Gov-
ernment bonds and other se-
curities of such classes and
in such amounts as may be
acceptable to the Board of
Directors of the District,
conditioned upon the faithful
performance by said bidder
of all duties imposed upon it
by law as such depository,
and conditioned upon the
safekeeping of all funds of
the District coming into its
hands as such depository.
Such pledge contract shall
be in manner and form ac-
ceptable to the Board of Di-
rectors of the District and
its attorney.

cember 31, 1968.
