A Mothers LoTe
There are several different kinds
of love Divine maternal pater-
nal and conjugal love The supe-
riority of Divine love over all is
of course incomparably great
this excepted no other approxi-
mates trne maternal love Begin
ning at infancy the mother watch
es over and cares for the little one
with great interest and with deep
solicitude sees it enter upon the
different stages of life jiaifoil lifts
fuj atured into raaii Olfwbman
LE6d7then it is tho mothers fond
hope joy and pride But oh how
ead when an erring selfwilled and
profligate child by the perform-
ance of some perverse deedr
crushes that loving heart that has
ever anxionsly palpitated in hopes
of a bright and prosperous future
for her child Although she has
been grievously disappointed and
her hopes blighted yet her love is
the same let the child act as it
may only true affection eman-
ates from a mothers heart H
there were inconstancy of affection
deeply secreted in the hidden re
cesses of tho heart a forward pro
fligate child would certainly ex
pose and undisguise the suppress
ed feeling and sentiment Could
there bo a more thorough test than
the above mentioned But no
her love is genuine loyal nnd un-
changeable For instance here is
an illustralion of a mothers fideli-
ty A child may take a deplora-
ble and irrevocable step All oth
ers aro ready to forsake deride
stigmatize you yet although you
perhaps have inflicted a deep in
cision upon tho mothers heart
nevertheless she is over whisper
ing a word of encouragement and
pouring into your heart the balm
of consolation and comfort It is
a conceded and indisputable fot
that a childs best friend is its

The following is an extract from
a letter written by Mr William S
Loomis of Shreveport La under
date of September 19th 1888
For a year I was afflicted with
a horrible case of blood poison
and upwards of five months of that
time I was unable to do work of
any kind My finger nails came
off tind my hair dropped out
leaving my head as clean and
smooth as if it had been shaved
I consulted the best local physi
cians and spent hundreds of dol
lars for medicines of different
kinds but without receiving tho
slightest benefit I was advised
finally to visit Hot Springs This
I did but becoming disgusted with
the treatment I way receiving
there commenced taking Swifts

after taking the first bottle and

bottles I was entirely cured cured

The followiug paragraph has
been going the rounds of the press
for some time Tis said a Pitts
burg woman heard her husband
swear and it so shocked her ten-

to a dead faint Think of a wo-
man hearing the man whom she
exalts of refined and delicate sen-
sibilities above all others who is
to her the prince of men tho per-
sonification of ell that is good and
noble descending to the vulgarity
which properly belongs only to
coarseness and the slums Profan
ity is the lowestorder of vulgarity
and although every woman of re
finement may not faint when her
licgo lord shocks her sensibilities
by its indulgence no true woman

Fragments for Farmers
good so
v
srpuco or pine planks thoroughly
soaked through with crude petro
leum will resist dampness and de-
cay for a long time according to
the American Agriculturist and
will keep clean and wholesome
Be careful in using salt on the
ground Salt will kill weeds to a
certain extent and it is also a rem-
edy for some kind of grubs in tho
soil but salt will kill othet plants
as well and its use may result in
a loss of some of the garden crops
Method precision industry
forethought economy sound and
ready judgment and intelligence
these aro the elements of success
ful business They aro as essen-
tial to the farmer of today as to
the business man in the greatest
commercial centre
Farmers doubtless can do much
themselves in the way of econo-
mizing their working expenses
To be properly managed in all its
details a farm requires the closest
attention Indeed thero is no
more difficult position to fill at tho
present day than that of tio suc
cessful farmer
The farmer who thinks there
can be nothing new in agriculture
should remember that thirty or
forty years ago his grandfather
thought the same way It is a fact
agriculture has made more ad
vancement during the past ten
years than in any other ten years
of tho worlds history
Farming has been honored by
tho wise in all ages of the world
and in our blessed land of liberty
it has been extolled as the field of
tho largest liberty and surest com-
petence tho godappointed conser-
vator of public and private virtue
upheld by personal contentment
and perfect peace Of course
this highsounding panegyric was
never intended to apply to farm-
ing universally to the lazy tho
ignorant the unthrifty but to
farming as it should be followed
in many instances not to be con-
stitutional failures but to those
who court success with nrdor and
intelligence or in other words to
good farmers It is as true now
as it over was and always will bb
that good farmers are the hap
piest and be3tcontented people
we have without exception Thero
are a number of farmers papers
not agricultural papers which
would have their readers believe
that farmers are the worst op-
pressed people on the continent
and that they are consequently
intensely unhappy and ought al
ways to bo armed to tho teeth and
in search of some terrible chimera
the cause of all their woes Why
not spend this misdirected energy
in an effort to make good farmers
of them Give them good crops
and good stock to eat the crops
and as they get out of debt and ba
gin to surround themselves with
somo of the comforts of this life
they will become independent and
contented and tho evils which
they are led to believe so griev
iously oppress tnm will depart
on the wings of tho east wind

all the present breeds of coach
horses a fact which no ono de-
nies Hors3 aen and breeders
will acknowledge thul thoy have
superior advantages over tho oth-
er breeds of draught aud coach
horses The principle advantage
is their power of reproducing
themselves in regard to size color
and general makeup They are
especially noted for their power of
producing coach teams as the
breed such uniform colts that
thoy aro easily matched up a fact
greatly to the advantage of tho
owner of the brood mare
The Cleveland Bays stand six-
teen hands to sixteen and three
quarter hands high weigh any-
where from twelvo hundred to
sh teen hundred pounds and aro
always bay in color with black
points They havo tho reputation
of being the most easily trained
and Token and tho most docile of
any known breed even the gentle
Percheron being placed second in
this respect Another thing in
their favor is the fact that half
bloods are hard to tell from full
bloods as to size weight and gen-
eral appearance These sell gen-
erally from two hundred dollars
up to sixhundred dollars Full
bloods sell for about tho same fig
ures as other breeds of English
and French draught horses They
are a general purpose horse in
every sense of the word good on
road as well as before the plow
willing workers not inclined to
balk under heavy loads and capa
ble of doing as much and as hard
work as any breed of draught
horses The breeding is general
ly confined to the Western states

The True Girl
Tho true girl has to be sought
for She does not parade herself
to show goods She is not fashion
able Generally she is not rich
but Oh what a heart she has when
you find her so large pure and
womanly If you gain her love
your two thousand are millions
Shell not ask for a carriage or a
first class home She will wear
simple dresses and turn them when
necessary with no vulgar magni
ficat to frown upon her economy
She will keep everything neat and
nice f your sky parlor and give
you such a welcome when you
come home that you will think
your parlor higher than ever She
will entertain true friends on a
dollar and astonish you with the
new thought how little happiness
depends on money She will tnako
you love if you dont youre a
brute aud teach you how to pity
while jou scorn a pool fashionable
society that thinks itself rich and
vainly tries to think itself happy
