Washington —Dr Sun Yat Son, first
president of the Chinese republic, is a
naturalized American.
Pekin, China.—After occupying the
throne of Chiua for nearly three cen-
turies, Manchu dynasty, represented
by the child emperor, Pu Yl, abated
Monday. Three edicts were issued,
the first proclaiming abdication; the
second dealing with the establishment
of the republic, and the third urgiug
the maintenance of peace and approv-
ing the conditions agreed upon by the
imperial premier, Yuan 8hl Kai, and
the republicans.
At an audience the empress dow-
ager touchingly thanked Yuan Shi Kai
for bis successful efforts in obtain-
ing good treatment for the imperials
from the republicans. The publica-
tion of the edicts has given profound
relief to every one in Pekin, both for-

the republican army, to which the peo-
ple of the provinces of China have re-
sponded, the empire is seething liko

plunged in misery.
’’’Yuan Shi Kai was therefore com-
manded to dispatch commissioners iu
order to confer with the republicans
with a view to calling of a national
assembly to decide on the future form
of government. Months have elapsed
and no settlement is now evident.
“ ‘The majority of the people are in
favor of a republic. From the prefer-
ence of the people's hearts the will of
heaven is discernible. Ho-.v could wa
oppose the desires of millions for the
glory of one family?
“Therefore we. the dowager em- you Va been born too long, don’t you?

Republican Pledges to Emperor.
In consideration for abdication tho
republicans make the following eight
pledges to the emperor:
The emperor shall retain his title
and shall bo respected as a foreign
monarch.
The etnprror shall receive an annual
grant of 4,000,000 taols until the cur-
rency in reformed, after which ho
shall receive $4,000,000 (Mexican).
A temporary residence shall he pro-
vided In the Forbidden City and later
the imperial family shall reside in tho
summer palace, ten miles outside of
l’ekln.
The emperor may observe tho sacri-
fices at his ancestral tombs and tem-
ples which will lie protected by re-
publican soldiers.
The great tomb of tho late emperor,
Kwang Su, will be completed and the
funeral ceremony iittingly observed at
tho republic’s expense.
The palace attendants may be re-
tained, but the number of eunuchs
can not lie increased.
The emperor’s property will bo pro-
tected tiy the republic.
The imperial guards will be gov-
erned by the army hoard, the republic
paying their salaries.
A contended point as to whether
tho throne shall he perpetuated or will
terminate with the present euiperor's
death is not mentioned.
