For those of our readers
who haven’t heard why
your Comanche Chief was
late on arrival last week,
we can explain.
When the papers were
delivered about 4:00 a.m.
last Wednesday and after
inspection, it was discov-
ered that one page had
been printed twice and an-
other page of the paper was
left out.
The BfOvtfmRtScI Bul-
letin’s publisher^ received
an early wake-up call from
us about the problem, He
reported that they would
print The Chief again,
but of course it would be
too late to go out in the
Wednesday mail.
Sorry about the delay,
but it was just one of those
" human errors.
And speaking of human
errors . . . Penny Graves,
our good friend at City
Hall, bless her heart, has to
be one of the most forgiv-
ing souls around. For the

third time. I have inadver-
tently, or stupidly is more
like it, given her a different
last name. When 1 talked
to her yesterday about my
boo-boo, she was very
forgiving and pleasant, as
usual.
Penny also should be
commended for her tireless
effort as chairman of the
Comanche 2010 Census.
She has made many, many
contacts, held many meet-
ings, and made posters she
is distributing around the
area. If we have a success-
ful Census count in Co-
manche County, and hope-
fully we do, much of that
success is due to Penny and
her hard work.

The Comanche Live-
stock Association’s 75th
Annual Auction was a huge
success.
Despite a slow local
economy, like the rest of
Texas and the country, buy-
ers stepped up and made
the sale one of our biggest.
Total dollars were not
a record, but the averages
were up there with the
2008 record sale.
- All the local businesses,
farmers, ranchers, and in-
dividuals joined together to
make this happen;
The Livestock Assn.,
the FFA Chapters, the 4-H
Clubs and the Community
Fund all work very, hard
making sure our youth are
rewarded for their efforts.
These organisations
have thank you ads in this
week's Chief. We hope you
will read these ads and if
you run into some of these
buyers, take a minute to
say, “thank yoya "

We've just been made
aware of two articles in the
New York Times, one in
(Jctober 2009 and the other
December 29. 2009.
The quite lengthy article
about Frank Volleman. a
Comanche County dairy-

and was £ very complimen-
tary article about how his
4000-Holstein cow opera-
tion and how they deal with
200 million pounds of cow
manure every year.
It’s a good article and
you can find it on the NYT
website at nytimcs.com.
The NYT October ar-
ticle was about Strawn and
Mingus and their six-man
football teams.

Editor,
My heart is full of joy
and thanksgiving as I write
this letter of gratitude to
the people of Comanche
and the surrounding area.
How blessed we are to live
in a small town with such a
generous spirit!
My husband and I are
volunteers for the Salva-
tion Army of Comanche,
an all volunteer organiza-
tion. Our Salvation Army
Unit is basically a food
pantry, assisting people
with groceries, monthly,
through the year. Wc also
help people with emer-
gency assistance, and oc-
casionally we assist tran-
sients.
The first month we were
ppen, we assisted 38 fami-
lies with food. In Decem-
ber of 2009, two and one
half years later, we helped
137 families. We also have
many more people coming
to us for emergency assis-
tance. The needs are great,
especially with the state of
the economy being what
it is today. Many people
who have lost jobs (and are
looking for new ones) have
come to us needing food,
but they are also looking
for a place that can give

The Salvation Army
of Comanche is funded
solely by local donations.
In 2009, we spent an aver-
age of $1,150 monthly to
purchase food at a reduced
rate from the Food Bank
of Abilene. This is in ad-
dition to our emergency
assistance needs, which
also continue to grow. That
is why I wanted to write
this letter of appreciation
to our community for the
generosity you have shown
us throughout the year,
but particularly during the
Christmas season.

stores. Thank you to all of
you brave volunteers who
rang the bells in “difficult
conditions." And thank
you so much for the gen-
erosity of everyone who
gave to the Kettle Project.
Each penny, nickel, dime,
quarter, or dollar you gave
helps tremendously. It was
a very good year in spite
of the struggling economy.
Thank you all!
Thank you to the busi-
nesses in town who made
significant monetary dona-
tions to this ministry in De-
cember. We cannot thank
you enough for your gen-
erosity. This will help us
tremendously.
One local business do-
nates processed meat to us
each winter. For a time last
year that was the only meat
we had because\the food
bank did not have any for
us to purchase. Thank you
so much!
A few businesses in
town have had food drives
from time to time. Thank
you so much for your help.
To the individuals, fam-
ilies, organizations, and
churches who have given
to the Salvation Army of
Comanche, we thank you.
One family had a very suc-
cessful fundraiser this year.
Some of you bring canned
goods to special functions
to share with us. Some of
you give a donation at the
end of the year, some give
occasionally, and a few
give monthly. Several of
you have given memorials.
Every donation is appreci-
ated. Thank you all!
In addition to all of you
who have given of your
resources, I want to thank
those who give of their
time: those who work at
the Food Pantry, those who
ring the bell and those who
schedule Bell Ringers (not
an easy task), those who
pick up the food once a
month in Abilene and those
who unload it (some even
taking off from work),
those who do the ordering
and fill out reports, those
