Spin your New Year’s resolutions the right way
s you tie up the loose
ends of 2014 and begin
to think about what 2015
holds, you may include a long
tradition of setting new year’s
resolutions. If you are like most
Americans, your resolutions
may look like this:
■ Lose weight.
■ Start a diet.
■ Start working out.
■ Drink less alcohol.
■ Quit smoking.
While these are all noble at-
tempts at living the new year in a
healthier way, too often these
resolutions are short-lived. How
long do your resolutions typical-
ly last? According to Richard
Wiseman, a psychologist at the
University of Hertfordshire who
researched this topic, 88 percent
Anna Love
NUTRITION
of those who set resolutions
failed. The people who set vague
notions of what they wanted to
achieve were more likely to fail.
Let’s look at the successes in-
stead Men tended to succeed with
more specific goals and rewards,
while women tended to succeed
with support people to whom they
could be accountable and even
work on the resolutions together.
Most resolutions fail due to
how people approach them and
trying to tackle too many at once.
This year, try something different.
Put a SMART spin on your reso-
lutions to make them stick so you
can succeed. Set SMART goals in-
stead of resolutions to help you fo-
cus on more specific behaviors
that increase success.
S: Specific — Most people set
a goal such as ‘lose weight” or “ex-
ercise more” or “fit into that dress”
but to succeed, focus on the actual
behaviors that need to happen on
a regular basis (usually more than
three to four times per week). Ex-
amples are getting more sleep or
walking more or cutting down on
sweets, beverages or cigarettes,
depending on your focus.
M: Measurable — Now that
you’ve chosen a behavior, set a
number to what needs to change
so you have a benchmark and
can measure and celebrate suc-
cesses along the way. This keeps
you on task from week to week
and day to day. Make progres-
sive goals where you gradually
increase steps or miles or min-
utes that you walk or decrease
food or spending splurges or so-
das or sweets or portions.
A: Achievable — Be realistic
with what you hope to achieve.
Often we set goals that are be-
yond our reach making our
goals seem impossible and lead-
ing us to just give up.
R: Relevant — Make sure
the behavior is tightly related to
your overall goal.
T: Time-bound or time-spe-
cific — Give yourself intermediate
goals to work toward. Instead of
aiming for losing 30 pounds by
March, break it down to 8 to 10
pounds per month and then
monitor progress on a regular ba-
sis. To prevent focusing too much
on the number on the scale, find
other ways to measure success (fit
of jeans or stamina walking up
stairs or energy level).
Good SMART Goal exam-
ples:
Example 1 — This week I will
eat 25 percent smaller portions at
every meal and increase my fruit
and vegetable servings to five to
six per day in place of the sweets
I’ve been eating over the holiday.
Example 2 — 1 will walk the
neighborhood for 30 minutes
per day for at least three to four
days per week. Each week, I’ll
add five minutes to my time.
If losing weight is one of your
goals for 2015, Love to Live Well
and Texas A&M Agrilife Exten-
sion have partnered to offer
weight-loss programs at two loca-
tions — Seniors in Motion and
D&D Sports Med — both led by a
registered dietitian, using curricu-
lum designed specifically to help
you make healthy lifestyle chang-
es and keep them. Costs vary for
each program but both offer se-
nior discounts. To learn more and
register, go to www.

We wish you a safe, healthy, and
happy new year.

Try something
bolder than bubbles
this New Year’s
By Alison Ladman

Not everything for New Year’s
Eve needs to be fussy, bubbly or
frilly. It’s OK to ring in 2015 with
something richer, smokier and
deliciously darker.
So we started with a stiff pour
of Scotch whisky. To dress it up for
the occasion — it is a celebration,
after all — we spiked it with ice
cider, apple brandy and a splash
of lemon juice. The result is a
bold, lightly sweet indulgence that
is just right to set a festive mood.
