Detroit, Mich., CLt. 13 —Race
suicide has been one of the prin-
cipal topics under discussion at
the conference, of the Woman’s
Christian Temperance Union,
which will close tonight at Wyan
dotte, a suburb of Detroit- Dr
Maary A. Willard of Detroit, ad
dressing the conference said that
the most extreme type of race
suicide was the investing of ig-
norant foreigners with the right
to vote, while the intelligent
women of the country weredenied

Continuing Dr. Willard said:
T would not attempt to deny
that few children are born into
American homes, for it is a la
mentable fact, too patent to be
contradicted. There two reasons
for this. One of them is that 1 fe
is becoming too strenuous for the
modern woman and she has not

lific in child bearing, and the
other is that men sacrifice upon
the shrines of Baachus and Eros
until they are powerless to lay

the tribute that would bless their
homes.
‘ Give women the ballot and
they will remove some of the
temptations from the path of
men, making it easier for them
to live pure, strong, health’y
lives, rendering them fit to con-
tinue the propagation of the race
And they will themselves become
invigorated and ready to again
assume the burdens under which
they have fainted. A new impe-

because they can do away with
the brothel that claims their
daughter.-: and the saloon that
claims tneir sons.”

Rumors of a great strike of oil
and gas near Wheeler have been
given widespread publicity in
Ardmore and many interested in
property in that section are jubi-
lant. The Ardmoreite learns ab
solutely that oil and gas were
struck Thursday night on the
Santa Fe’s property and that the
11 iw of both .is so great that all
efforts to stop it are futile.
With the first intimation that
oil and gas were found many
persons went to Wheeler. Thirty
people left for that place this
morning. It is known that one
property deal was made shortly
after the discovery that will in-
volve a large sum of money.
Many were anxious to secure
land near WTheeler, but could find
none available, The Santa Fe
owns about 3600 acres of land in
that section and has been pros-
pecting for oil for some time.
From the time that the land was
acquired by the road Expert
Goodrich has maintained tnat oil
existed in paying quantities.
The details of the strike are
very meagre. It was learned,
however, that while drilling a
cap rock was struck and that
oil and gas shot up 100 feet
above the well. Efforfs to con-
trol the flow were useless.
Officials of the Santa Fe were
notified immediately and aienow
at Wheeler, having come direct
rom Galveston. It is stu.;ed that
Vice-president Nixon is on the
ground and that he is overjoyed
with the find. It was through
Mr. Nixon’s efforts that the land
was purchased and he has dis-
played great interest in the oil
wells and fields since the work of
drilling commenced.
It is known that some time ago
gas was struck at a depth of 160
eet and also at a depth of 300
eet* The surface veins of gas
were utilized in running the ma-
chinery for drilling.
It is learned on good authority
that both of these products will
be piped into Ardmore by the
company. However, their plans
are not known just at present.
The finding of gas in commer-
cial quantities and an inexhaust-
ible supply of oil wi'l mean much
for Ardmore and the surround-
ing country. Prospectors will
come in here by the hundreds
and the town will be vastly ben-
efited. Oil has made many towns
famous and rich. It is hoped
that Ardmore will share a sim-
ilar fate.—Ardmorite.

The-Wm. Killgore Co.
Pawnee, Okla., Oct. 13 — lion.
B. S. McGuire, Oklahoma’s dele-
gate in congress has received the
following letter from United
States Senator B-veridge in
which Mr. Beveridge assures
him that there need be no fear in
the two territories in regard to
statehood. He also refers very
decidedly to the “Tomfoolery” of
the Sequoyah movement and de-
clares it a scheme to prevent
statehood of any sort. The let-
ter, dated at Indianapolis, fo'Jows.
My Dear McGuire.
Oa my return from my vaca-
tion Shipp (Beveridge’s si cretary
who visited Oklahoma atthe time)
told me all about your magi ific -nt
statehood convention and had
many pleasant things to say
about you-
You need have no feir, Oklaho
ma and Indian Territory com-
bined into one state will be ad-
mitted as a single American
commonwealth at the coming
session of congress.
By the way, what does all that
“Tomfoolery” mean over in the
Indian Territory? Write to me
about it- it looks to me like a
scheme to prevent statehood of
any kind. >
They know just as well as I do
that no bill making Indian Terri-
tory a state by itself can pass. If
a bill making Oklahoma a state by
itself cannot pass, and it cannot,
certainly a bill making Indian
Territory a state by itself cannot
pass. Let me k iow all about it.
Sincerely,
Albert K Beveridge.

Yesterday deputy marshals raid

were in operation in this city.
There were eight persons placed
under arrest, charged either
with running a gambling house
or with gambling. The United
States commissioner was with a
party of raiders, and as fast as
the men were arrested he opened
court then and there in the gam-
bling halls. Whenever one under
arrest would plead guilty h0 was
fined then and there. If hecould
pay he was released, if not he
was sent to jiil. Some pleaded
not guilty and will be tried by
the grand jury which is now in
session. All the gambling para-
