HORNSBY
Sterling L. Hornsby
was born on September 27,
1920, -in Brown County,
Texas. He was the son of
Sterling Elder Hornsby and
Mary Sabina "Bina" Ward
Hornsby. He quietly passed
from this earth in the early
morning of Christmas Eve,
December 24, 2009, at the-
Methodist Hospital in Dal-
las, Texas.
He was preceded in
death by his parents;
brothers, Lenard Arnold,
James Alexander, Gumsey
Lewis, and Norman Ward
Hornsby; sister, Genev-
ieve Hornsby Greenwood;
and great-grandsons, Tren-
ton and Jeremy Fisher. He
is survived by his wile ot
sixty-five • years, Velma
Ruth Stewart Hornsby;
daughters, Gwen Robert-
son Scoggins, and Shirley
Hornsby Wetzel; son, Gary
Wayne Hornsby; seven
grandchildren; nineteen
great-grandchildren; and
twelve great-great grand-
children; as well as many
nieces, nephews, honor1
ary sisters and brothers,
and honorary daughter,
Fran Gaconnier, who was
a wonderful neighbor and w
friend to Sterling and Vel-
ma.
Sterling worked for
the Civilian Conservation
Corps whert he was fif-
teen, and joined the Navy
in 1940. His first ship, the
U.S.S. Elliot, was stationed
at Peiyl Harbor. The Elliot
left the harbor on Decem-
ber 5, 1941. for the John-
ston Islands, but returircd
to Hawaii when the news
came of the attack. The El-
liot later took part in the
Battle of the Aleutian Is-
lands. He joined the crew
of the newly commissioned
U.S.S. Lowndes in Oregon
in August 1944, training to
be part of the beach party
that would accompany the
Marines into battle. On Oc-
tober 4. 1944, he married
Mrs. Velma Stewart Rob-
ertson in Long Beach, Cali-
fornia. Mrs. Robertson was
born in Comanche County,
and they first met when he
was seven and she was six.
He fell in love with her on
the spot, and spent his last
years taking care of her.
The Lowndes saw action
at Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
By that time. Sterling had
been promoted to Chief
Petty Officer, transferring
from the beach party to the
Signal Corps. He served in
the Navy for twenty years,
retiring to Dallas in i960.
The fuperal service
was held on December 31,
2009, at Trinity Baptist
Church in Grand Prairie,
Texas. His nephew, Rev.
Michael Whisenant. and
long-time friend Rev. Tom
Heath officiated. Grand-
Stm, Baylor Wetzel read a
poem his thirteen year old
daughter Autumn wrote in
honor of her great-grand-
father, and grandson Jeff
Wetzel ended the service
with a song he wrote. The
Sailor. On January 4. 2010,
a military service was held
at the Dallas/Fort Worth
National Cemetery. The
procession was escorted
by the Patriot Guards, and
Sterling received full mili-
tary honors.
