OF CONCENSUS OF OPINION OF THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE ASSEMBLIES OF GOD OF
FREESTONE COUNTY REGARDING LEGALIZING THE SALE OF BEER
We, the pastors, deacons, officers, teachers, and
. me^bers of the Assembly of God Church, Fairfield,
ana Bethel, Freestone Coounty, Texas, desire to sub-
mit opposition to the proposed move to legalize alco-
holic beverages of any kind within the confines of this
cunty, city and community.
We understand from reliable sources that such
move is under way to remove restrictions allowing
alcoholic beverages to be sold under legal procedure
to the effect that a petition is being circulated desir-
ing 300 people to place their indorsement upon the
same in order to force an election repealing the Local
Option Law prohibiting the sale of alcoholic bever-
ages. Also this is being secretly circulated to elimin-'
ate publicity and taking advantage with conniving
methods, which in the main defeats their purpose, in-
asmuch as they are not willing for the public to know
- whose names appear on said petition. Too, such de-'
ceiving methods destroys the very principle of moral,
social, and Christian standards.

If such petition should appear before the Honor-
able Commissioners Court of this County demanding
an election on said question, the names on this petition
should be carefully scrutinized to the effect that every
signer of the same is a bona-fide voter with a Poll Tax
Receipt or the equivalent. Otherwise, said petition
should not be considered by the Honorable Commis-
sioners’ Court which would make such instrument in-
valid. Also, if an election is declared, the signers, pro-
moters, and sponsors of this move should be willing to
have their names published in every paper of this
county 30 days before the election.
The foregoing is only an expression from those
whose names are affixed hereon. On the other hand,
if this move continues, we shall fight to the finish, God
being our helper, with all our resources to stamp out
this heartless enemy whose fangs are deadly with dis-
astrous results in the spread of moral, social, and
spiritual collapse.

In the year 1940 God placed a burden of prayer up-
on the hearts of a small prayer group in the town of
Fairfield that beer might be voted out of our county.
Similar burdens were placed upon the hearts of in-
dividuals and groups over the county. We knew our
strength was small, but our trust was in the Great God
who said “Call unto Me and I will answer thee.” We
earnestly called unto Him and that same year beei
was voted out; honky tonks closed and some who had
been employed in the sale of intoxicating liquors gave
their lives in consecrated service to God.
We are again facing a crisis over an effort to vote
beer back in this county. We believe God is the same
Yesterday, Today and Forever; that he has all Power
in Heaven and in Earth, and there is nothing too hard
for Him. “Righteousness exalteth a nation but sin is
a reproach to any people,” Prov. 14:34. Let us again
band ourselves together as the people of God through
prayer and effort, and claim God’s promise “When the
enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will
lift up a standard against him.” God’s blessing is up-
on those that do His will, but His face is against those
that do evil. “Woe uno him that giveth his neighbor
drink, that putteth the bottle to him and maketh him
drink.” Habakkuk 2:15.
