Saldana-Garza Vows Repeated August 22

Russell of Las Vegas, Ne-
vada gave talks to the Wes-
laco Rotary Club with Rota-
rians from Mercedes, Donna
Edcouch and Elsa and their
wives as guests, on Thurs-
day evening. She also talked
at Richard's Gold Room in
Harlingen at a luncheon for
two Rotary Clubs on Friday.

Are Displayed
Now on display at the Mer-
cedes Memorial Library, is
a collection of native handi-
work and artifacts from the
West African state of Ca-
maroon. The collection is on
loan to the library by cour-
tesy of Mr. and Mrs. Wally
Bunton of Mercedes,
Is Speaker
and song writer. Her book of
poems, “Sometimes I Think
I Never Was** was publish-
ed by Carlton Press and
was dedicated to her father,
the late H. B. Swedlund Jr.
Mrs. Russell was a native
of the Valley and her hus-
band William (Bill) Russell,
also a Texan, is an edito-
rial writer for the Las Ve-
gas Times. They are both
school teachers in their city.
The entertainer is the
granddaughter of Mrs. H. B.
Swedlund of Weslaco. Her
late grandfather was a mem-
ber of the Rotary Club of
Weslaco. She is a niece of
L. G. Swedlund of Elsa.
Cleve Roe of Elsa Texas
Plastic's is president of the
Edcouch-Elsa Rotary and
was seated at the head table
at the'gathering of the four
Rotary clubs.
Miss Maria Carmen Garza
and Jaime J. Saldana were
united in marriage in an
evening ceremony perform-
ed by the Rev. Jerome Bur-
nett August 22 in Our Lady
of Mercy Catholic Church.
Parents of the couple are
Mr. and Mrs. Benito Garza
and Mr. and Mrs. Heriberto
Saldana, all of Mercedes.
Vows were exchanged be-
fore an altar with a silver
arch adorned with greenery
and lavender asters with a
touch of yellow. Tall glads
of yellow and lavender mums
were on the main and side
altar. Satin bows marked the
family pews.
Miss Diana Salinas of
Mercedes provided music at
the organ.
Given in marriage by her
father, the bride wore a for-
mal gown styled with empire
bodice with standing lace
collar and lace overlay bis-
hop cuffed sleeves. The A-
line skirt of mira-mist was
enhanced with a wide band
of scalloped lace at the hem-
line. Narrow bands of lace
extended from the waist to
the hem.
Her headdress was of
pearlized orange blossoms
from which a mantilla ofap-
pliqued illusion banded with
lace flowed to chapel length.
She carried a nosegay bou-
quet of yellow rose buds
with yellow streamers tied
in lover's knots.
Mrs. Adan Flores of Mer-
cedes was matron of honor.
Maid of honor was Miss Nora
Garza. Miss Silvia Solis and
Miss Norma Garza, both of
Mercedes were brides-
maids.
Little Miss Melissa Sali-
nas, niece of the bridegroom
and from Edcouch, was flo-
wer girl. J.J, Gonzalez of
Mercedes, nephew of the
bride, served as ring bear-
er.
Adan Flores of Mercedes
was best man.
Other attendants in the
wedding party were Mr. and
Mrs. Joe Gonzales, pri-
meros padrinos; Mr. and
Mrs. Rene Salinas, arras
and Mr. and Mrs. Leonardo
Garcia, lazo.
A reception followed in
the church parish hall. Ar-
rangements in yellow and la-
vender, the couple’s chosen
colors, were at vantage
points.
The couple will make
their home in Weslaco fol-
lowing a trip to Mexico Ci-
ty.
The new Mrs. Saldana is
a graduate of Mercedes high
school, attended Pan Amer-
ican University and is pre-
sently employed by the Tex-
sun Corp. in Weslaco.
The bridegroom graduated
from Edcouch-Elsa high
school and is a senior ma-
joring in government at Pan
American University.

Mrs. Dora Flores Jasso of
Elsa was honoree at a pink
and blue baby shower at the
home of her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Jose Flores of El-
sa Sunday, August 20.
Others assisting with hos-
tess duties were Mrs. Eliza
Flores, Mrs. Suzie Flores,
Miss Ellie Puente. Mrs.Ma-
rie Flores, Mrs. Elizar Cas-
tillo, Mrs. Ester Mora.

McCannon are the parents of
a son, born August 15 named
Timothy, weighing 7 lbs. and
13 oz. Mr. Cannon formerly
lived in Monte Alto.

Captain and Mrs. Richard
L. Ruddell of RAF Upper
Heyford, England announce
the birth of their first son,
Joshua Bradford. He was
born at the John Radcliffe
Hospital, Oxford, England on
August 11. He weighed six
pounds, ten ounces.
Joshua is the grandson of
Mr. and Mrs. Joaquin J. Fer-
nandez who recently moved
from McAllen to Sacra-
mento, California, where
Mr. Fernandez accepted an
appointment as assistant
professor of music at Sacre-
mento State University. He
will also lecture on the in-
fluences of Mexican and
Spanish cultures.
Paternal grandparents are
Mr. and Mrs. Joe F. Cox
of Robinson, Illinois.
Couple United at Our Lady of Mercy Church
Miss Becky Rodriguez of
Mercedes exchanged marri-
age vows with Roel Maldon-
ado of Falfurrias on August
5 at Our Lady of Mercy Ca-
tholic Church with the Rev.
Jerome Burnett performing
the ceremony.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ro-
driguez of Mercedes and Mr.
and Mrs. Luciano Maldonado
of Falfurrias are parents of
the couple.
An arch at the aisle en-
trance was decorated with
Southern smilax. Large ar-
rangements of lavender car-
nations, pink gladiolas and
lavender pompom mums we-
re on the main altar. Side al-
tars held arrangements of
lavender carnations, pink
gladiolas and lavender pom
pom mums.
Miss Jackie Rainey of
Weslaco, vocalist, was ac-
companied by Miss Diana
Salinas at the organ. Miss
Salinas also provided tradi-
tional wedding music during
the ceremony.
Entering on the arm of her
father, the bride chose a for-
mal Victorian gown of pale
candlelight silk organza with
Alencon lace reminiscent of
T urn of the Century styling.
The high-necked bodice fea-
tured rows of lace applique,
centered with miniature
F rench buttons, extending
from shoulder to waistline
in a deep bib effect. The
long slender sleeves were
delicately flounced at the
wrists with Edwardian fluted
cuffs. Fluted ruffling edged
the skirt and the lavish re-
dingote overskirt which flar-
ed to chapel length.
Complementing her gown
was a designer Victorian hat
of Alencon lace traced in
pearls. Wide organza strea-
mers fell to floor length
from three large roses at
the back of the crown.
The bride carried a cas-
cading wedding bouquet of
white roses and lavender fea-
thered carnations centered
with a lavender hybrid or-
chid.
Mrs. Rosemari Tovar of
Smithville was matron of
honor. Bridesmaids were
Miss Linda Wisner, Miss
Rosa Garcia and Miss Mary
Bernal, all of Mercedes.
They wore slim multicolor
sleeveless formals featuring
a high neckline and ruffled
flounce around the hem.
Eugenio Solis Jr. was best
man. Ushers were Arturo
Almendorez, Carlos Chavez,
Robert Rodriguez and Rudol-
fo Rivera.
For her daughter's wed-
ding, Mrs. Rodriguez chose
a purple knit A-line street
length dress. Mrs. Maldona-
do selected a pink costume.
Both wore lavender orchid
corsages.
A reception followed the
ceremony at the Mercedes
Civic Center where tall colo-
nial columns were garlanded
with smilax. The garden-like
setting, accented with foliage
plants and topiary trees was
highlighted by a central cu-
pid fountain.
Silver appointments were
used for the bride's table
which was skirted in laven-
der satin with an overlay of
white organdy.
The three-tiered wedding
cake was patterned with la-
vender sugar spun roses and
topped with satin covered
wedding bells.
The bridegroom's table
was laid with gold lame.
Brass appointments were
used.
Assisting at the reception
were Mrs. F. Tovar, Mrs.
Liborio Hinojosa, Mrs. Gil-
bert Martinez and Mrs. Joe
Martinez.
Attending the bride's book
were Miss Cheryl Riley and
Miss Cindy Champion, both
of Mercedes.
The bride is a graduate
of Mercedes high school and
attended Austin Beauty
School and Academia de Bel-
leza Ella in Monterrey, Mex-
ico.
The couple are making
their home in Rio Grande
City.
