At Pan Am
Teresita Cadena of Mer-
cedes was one of 10 'cum
laude* graduates of the Sch-
ool of Humanities and Social
Studies at Pan American Un-
iversity at August 22 gradu-
ation ceremonies. In the
school of business adminis-
tration, Homero Garza of
Mercedes was a 'cum laude’
graduate.
Also on August 22, Mrs.
Barbara Lucas and Daniel
Rodriguez of Mercedes re-
ceived Bachelor of Science
degrees from the School of
Education; Jose J. Garcia,
Michael E. O’Shea, William
G. O’Shea, Maria Reyes,
Mrs. Violet Treasure and
Maria Valdez received Ba-
chelor of Arts degrees from
the School of Humanities and
Social Studies; Mary L. Qui-
roga and San Juanita Serna
received School of Education
degrees, and Elizabeth Gal-
van and Mrs. Diana Narvaez
received Bachelor’s degrees
from the Inter-American In-
stitute.
Basic Trainee
Private Valdemar J. So-
lis, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Lazaro Solis, Route 1, Ed-
couch, recently completed
eight weeks of basic train-
ing at the U.S. Army Train-
ing Center, Infantry, Ft.
Polk, La.
He received instruction in
drill and ceremonies, wea-
pons, map reading, combat
tactics, military courtesy,
military justice, first aid,
and Army history and tra-
ditions.
Register Students
Registration for students
in the La Villa Independent
School District will be held
on Friday from 8 a.m. to
noon, according to Daniel
Hernandez, Superintendent.
All teachers met Monday,
August 23, for in-service
training.
All children will be reg-
istered on Friday by their
teachers in their home
rooms. All students should
be accompanied by at least
one parent in order that the
registration form may be
signed.
This school year will be-
gin Monday, August 30, and
end May 30, 1972, according
to Superintendent Hernan-
dez.
Monte Alto
School Set
Monte Alto school had
its first teachers meeting
on Monday, August 23, at
the school library.
On Tuesday and Wednes-
day, Monte Alto teachers
attended in-service training
in Pharr and McAllen.
In-service has been plan-
ned at the school for the tea-
chers on Thursday and Fri-
day, August 26 and 27.
Regular classes will start
on Monday, August 30, with
registration at that time.
The school buses will make
the regular runs on August
30.
Following is a list of tea-
chers and assignments for
the 1971 and 1972 school
year:
Pre-school — Miss Delia
Guerra.
1st grade — Mrs. Lola
Baylor.
2nd grade — Mrs. Sylvia
O. Wells.
3rd grade — Mrs. Piedad
Mandryano and Mrs. Dorothy
Leidner.
4th grade — George Wells.
5th grade — James Rich-
ardson and Armando Salinas.
The 6th, 7th and 8thgrades
are departmentalized, with
Jose Lopez in charge of
Language Arts, J.M. Perez,
social studies, Miss Janie
Davila, mathematics andHi-
lario Ramirez, science.
Mrs. Betty Jones will
serve as nurse and Mrs.
Sylvia Lujan as the counse-
lor, according to Superin-
tendent Enrique Mendiola.
