School Gift From Seniors of '70 Helped Student Trainees
Mercedes high school sen-
iors of 1970 have dedicated
a campus addition of a con-
crete sidewalk, tables and
benches to their school, in
a project financed by last
year’s senior class play.
The plan also provided
training for Coordinated Vo-
cational Academic Education
students of instructor En-
rique Castillo who handled
the planning and labor.
Located north of the new
MHS classroom building, the
patio-type addition includes 72-feet-long sidewalk,

tion voting booths Tuesday,
April 6. The polling place
will be open from 7 a.m. un-

Five candidates for the
two openings include two
campaign teams, Salvador
Barron and Commissioner
Liborio Hinojosa and Eli
Rios and Commissioner Ig-
nacio Garcia. Fifth candi-
date is Antonio Yznaga.

'Best Science Fair Ever Staged in Mercedes’ Rewards Students’ 'Tremendous Amount of Work’
Three’Sweepstakes’winners in the Biological Division for senior high school students, one
in the MHS Physical Division and one top winner in the elementary division were honored in
last week’s 12th annual Mercedes Science Fair at the Civic Center.
’’This is probably the best Science Fair ever staged in Mercedes, ” said Richard Lehman,
Fair coordinator and MHS science teacher, ’’The high school exhibit looked like a Regional
Science Fair; I am extremely proud of the tremendous amount of work all the students have
put into their projects, they all have done an excellent job".
High school ’Sweepstakes’ winners were George Metzger, ’Cancer Study,; Gary Schwarz,
’Kidney Efficiency vs. Organism Development’, and Barbara Harris, ’Cyclic Sections’, in the
high school Biological Division; Betty Kay Pruitt, ’Carotene Proportions in Orange Leaves,
Peel and Pulp', in the high school Physical Division, and Janie Palacios, 'Seed by Germina-
tion', in the Elementary Division. Janie is a sixth grade student at Kennedy elementary.
