TWO FROM MERCEDES ARE WINNERS—The Texas Special
Olympics Track Meet at San Antonio last week-end produced
two local winners. Armando Quintero, left above, was a first
place ’Gold MedalT winner in the mile run and Armando Mora,
right above, was a fifth place statewide winner in the 50 yard
dash event. The boys were trained by Joe Gonzales and James
Cuthbertson, Mercedes varsity coaches.

UR Plan Change
Has Approval
VOTERS WILL CHOOSE a new Precinct 1 Commissioner
from these two survivors of the May Primary Election. Ra-
miro Cavazos, left, and Raul Gonzalez, Jr., right, are each
making final voter appeals this week for Saturday ballot sup-
port.
Only one member of the ‘public’
was on hand Monday at a Public Hear-
ing regarding a change in the existing
Urban Renewal Plan for Mercedes —
and he was in favor of change — so
now steps will be taken to amend the
Plan.
The proposal brought before mem-
bers of the Mercedes City Commis-
sion, Zoning Board, Planning Com-
mission and Urban Renewal Board was
to allow ‘transient housing* on Blocks
12 and 13 of the original townsite
of Mercedes. That property is Urban
Renewal owned land on the east side
of Ohio Street between the Masonic
Temple on the south and a building
owned by the Model Laundry on the
north, including several lots on Illi-
nois Street.
The original Plan did not allow
‘transient housing’ in the area, but
a developer had indicated interest
in constructing 35 units of a motel-
apartment type ... if allowed to do
so by local and area UR officials.
Voters Will Choose State, County, Local

THAT WOMAN’ CAME TO MERCEDES--Mrs. Frances Farenthold, candidate for Governor,
greeted some 200 of her Mid-Valley supporters at a reception last week at the Rodeway Inn.
Mercedes was one of her final Valley appearances before the June 3 election.

BEFORE THE DECORATIONS WERE IN PLACE Mercedes Senior Class members practiced
for graduation ceremonies at Tiger Stadium. This was the scene as the 177 candidates for
graduation rehearsed before Baccalaureate Services.
Mercedes area Democratic voters
will join thousands of other Texans
this Saturday in Run-off Election vo-
ting to determine State, County and
Precinct nominees for the November
General Election.
Locally, the highest interest is in
the Precinct Commissioner and
Constable races.
Ramiro Cavazos of Weslaco, high
man in the May primary, faces run-
ner-up Raul Gonzalez, Jr. of Elsa,
in a hotly contested Commissioner
election. Winner will succeed Herb
Pike, of Weslaco, who is stepping down
First game score: Taylor 8,Mer-
cedes 1.
Now the Mercedes baseball Ti-
gers will have to reach all the way
back to their third game of the season
to find a situation similar to that fac-
ing them Friday night in Austin. It’ll
be win ... or else, just as it was in
the McAllen Tournament. At that point
the Tigers had dropped their first
two games of the season and were
facing a dismal future. But the team
responded and won . . . and they kept
on winning until the District title was
theirs and they had run up 16 wins in
a row.
“There’s no reason we can’t re-
peat a comeback like that,’’ says
Mercedes Coach DonGoza, “thisteam
has the ability, desire and character
to take command of the series and win.
I’m convinced we’ve got as good a
team as there is in the State of Tex-
as. What we’ll need to see in Austin
is another great crowd of Mercedes
after long tenure in that office. Mr.
Cavazos has nine years public office
experience as a Justice of the Peace
in the Weslaco area while Mr. Gonza-
lez is a newcomer to Precinct politics.
Veteran Constable Gene Foley of
Mercedes, the top vote getter in that
race in May, will go against R. de la
Pena of Weslaco in the Constable con-
test. Mr. Foley is a 16-year veteran
in the Constable post and Mr. de la
Pena had seven years duty as a Con-
stable before his post was abolished
by Commissioner’s Court action.
Polling places will be the same
fans because this team knows how
well the community has supported
it, and that support has been a big
factor in its success.’’
If mid-week indications hold true,
Coach Goza and the Tigers will see
plenty of fan support in Austin. Many
full carloads of supporters were plan-
ning an Austin trip while others were
making charter bus plans. There
seemed to be no doubt of continuing
support from the Mercedes communi-
ty.
The Austin game will be played at
Nelson Field with a starting time of
8 p.m. Coach Goza has settled on
Ramon Perez, Jr., as starting pitch-
er. The third series game is set
for Seguin’s Community Park Sat-
urday at 4 p.m. No pitching plans
have been announced.
Tuesday night at Pan American
Field the Taylor Ducks showed why
they have played State final baseball
(Continued on Page 4)
Saturday as they were in the May
Primary Election. Voting Precinct 1
residents will cast ballots at the
Chamber of Commerce office on High-
way 83, Precinct 21 voters will go to
the Knights of Columbus building on
Third Street, City Hall will be the
site of Precinct 32 voting and Pre-
cinct 46 will vote at the Mercedes
Housing Authority on Vermont Street.
Usual poll hours of 7 a.m. until
7 p.m. will be kept.
Precincts 1 and 46 will cast bal-
lots for State Legislature, District 49,
Candidates are Greg Montoya of Elsa
and Darrell Smith of Kingsville. The
remainder of the ballot is the same
for all Mercedes Precincts and is as
follows:

Mrs. Frances Farenthold
Dolph Briscoe
