CAJOLE LETTER
May Day Gossip How it Was Observed
and What Was Accomplished
It li Asserted the Clouds Between the Emperor
aaaBIimark are Qearlns Away and
lJsnnderttandlars Explained-
XCopyriehtedby the Associated Pxessl
BsSiix May 3 rThe first prominent
result of the Mayday agitation has been
a formidable movement among manu-
facturers merchants mine owners and
others employing Iarjre numbers of Social-
ists to promote foreign Germans against
strikers The Idea had its oriRin in a
cornnjjjnieatlon that passed between mer
chanCrnrjd manufacturers and kindred
oreamintions In Chemnitz namhon
Breme and Frankfort regardlne the
Mayday demonstrations at the time when
the celebration threatened to paralyze
trade These communications led to
further united action At a meeting of
Chemnitz manufacturers yesterday
which was attended by representatives of
several Berlin industries it was decided
to create an employer protection
union If tnis plan Is carried out a
league will be formed covering Germany
with Workmens employers asso-
ciations The deolared aim
of those united is for co operation
ngalnst wanton strikes But there will
be one inevitable transom to co-operation
At Chemnitz reflecting the opin-
ion of a majority in the victory of masters
over the men some of the newspapers
similarly draw conclusions that employ-
ers if working in union can defeat the
utmost efforts of malcontent work-
men The failure of the demonstration
is held to be a set off to the Socialists
success The Frelssige Zeitung says af-
ter tnti Socialist leaders had by their
ambiguous manifestos betrayed their
desire for as untenative an abstinence
from work as possible the limitation
of the movement to isolated eroups dem-
onstrates bow weak is the Influence
of Socialist deputies in every-
thing beyond the registering
of a secret vote at elections But
both employers and the committee
of the press overlook the fact that So-
cialist leaders with nearly the unani-
mous approval of workmen are opposed
to any form of demonstration that mieht
lead to a collision with authorities or em-
ployers
A Berlin Socialist organ deolared on
the evening of Mayday that no workmen
in possession of their senses would resort
to illegal manifestations when trying to
induce legislate bodies to concede their
demands Soolalist leaders do not deem
the celebration a failure
In conversation on the subject Herr
Iiiebknecht said the public expectation of
the demonstrations menancing to peace
arose from erroneous reports which were
widely circulated as to how workmen in-
Tended to observe the day It was a
pacific and orderly celebration In ac-
cordance with the plans of the Socialists
Anlarticle In to days Voksolatt extols
the day as the grandest and most com-
plete celebration conceivable establish-
ing an international Social holiday The
writer adds although many farmers and
workmen were compelled to work this
did not detract from the success of work-
men
The Hamburg Eacbriobten gives a
startling plan to tho secret history
jf Prince Bismarcks retirement by stat-
Sg as a positive fact that the emperors
lnd was prejudiced by enemies wuo in
fluenced him to believe that the prince
took such large doses of morphine that be
often lost the power of connected
thought Reports reached the emperor
in such a credible form tbat be
deemed it necessary to summon
Dr Schwennigea in order to ques-
tion him regarding Bismarcks
condition and babits Bismarck re-
sented the Inquiries put to his dpctor
although the answers received by the
emperor convinced him that the reports
were groundless At tne same ime
I interested parties busied themselves with
tticreatlug in the chancellors mind an
impression that the emperor was resolved
to get rid of him at any price and was
taking stops to find a successor the
manipulators of the intrigue in the
meantime assuring the emperor that
Bismarck was firmly resolved to
resit u The Nachrichten adds It will
not be long bdforo the names of the au-
thors of this intrigue are disclosed
The articles indicate a desire on the part
of Bismarck to renew close relations with
the emperor
The dispatch sent by the emperor to
the chancellor from Strosburg was
couched m the old terms of cordiality
Since Imperial Aide-de-Camp Lendborf
returned S rom his sojourn at Friedrichs
rhue the clouds between the emperor and
Bismarck have been clearing away and
all misunderstandings are being ex-
plained

Brecklnridce Investigating Committee
Little Bock Ark May 4 The pro-
ceedings of the Clayton Breckenridge In-
vestigating committee yesterday was
very sensational and attraoted a large
crowd of spectators to the courtroom
During the morning the two clerks of
election in Howard township Conway
county told what they knew about the
taking of the ballot box and the murder
of Clayton
In the afternoon James Sater the man
supposed to have discovered the mur-
derer arrived from Jeffersonvllle lnd
He was put on the stand and told about
the same story implicating Thomas
Hooper as the murderer that was con-
tained in the report telegraphed a few
days ago from Los Angeles
Last night James Hooper ayouns
man twenty three years of age
rwas examined at considerable length and
corroborated much of the evidence given
by Sater DurlugMrs Hoopers exami
tlonshe denied ever having heard or met
