Serious efforts to establish silk culture
in Mexico are being made and recently
Governor Marquez of Pueblo has im-
ported from China thousands of young
mulberry trees partly at his own ex-

his estate where he has a school of prac-

a large quantity of silk worms have been

It 13 rumored that Land Commissioner

and that he favors a commission The
commission that Mr Hall favors would be
such a llttlo thing you know that
the railroad jury would never have the

The diligence used by the scientiflo

canvass for governor and this morning
the report is officially confirmed Gov
Throckmortons friends will read his de-
cision with regret and deplore the cause
that takes their beloved leader from the

To tiie railroads The Gazette Is so
much of a railroad paper that it has been
called a hireling of Jay Gould
Therefore The Gazette has a right to
advise railroads Keep out of the gu-
bernatorial fight m Texas this year and
do not nllow your employes to organize
businessmens nonpartisan clubs
formed to oppose the commission amend-
ment The one way to give that amend-
ment 100000 majority is for the railroads
and their attorneys to deny the right o
the state to regulate railroads
Ir anything was needed to insure the
adoption of the railroad commission
amendment it was supplied in the politi-
cal device of organizing alleged nonpar-
tisan business mens clubs to oppose all
railway regulation Whom the Gods
wish to destroy they first make mad nnd
if the railroads of Texas wish to arouse
the people from the Red to the Rio
Grande and inflame the present conserva-
tive demand into a feverish ngitation
thoy have but to encourage their bench
men to oppose even the declaration of a-
right to regulate These nonpartisan
business mens clubs are tho creations of
political desperation and folly The
right to regulato is one thing and the
expediency of regulation another The
political fool has said in his heart the
people have no right to regulate
There can be no difference of opinion
as to the exlstenoe of greater demand for
exertion on the part of all good citizens
for the education of the masses Hordes
of illiterate emigrants are pouring into
the country swelling the ranks of voters
and too often those of orime In a coun
try whore suffrage is so easily obtained
there is threatened dangers in the faot
that llliteraoy may ere long hold the
balance and sway it at its will Indeed
so near seems this danger that already
in some states steps are now being taken
to alter their constitutions In such a way
that there shall be an educational quali-
fication requited for the exercise of suf-
frage It may be a trite saying that the
wellbeing of the state depends upon the
intelligence of its Inhabitants but trite-
ness amounts to nothing when the Import-
ance of the truth uttered is considered
State and Individual aotlvity must be
used to stem a tide of ignoranca that un
stayed will overwhelm good government
PRESIDENTIAL FORECASTING
There is no man so prominently before
the publio as probable nominee by the
Democratic party for the presidenoy ss is
Mr Cleveland This prominence Is due
largely to tho warm support and slrauajr
personal alleglanoe of his friends and the
bitter animosity ot the opposite party
inevitable results of the marked individ-

neither an immaculate saint nor an un-

was better than It had been for tha last
ten years Shortly after that announce-
ment I was attaoked with la grippe

the hope of overcoming this trouble is

Fort Worth May 13 The Spring
Palace is quite different from what It
was last year Last year was the trial
this year it Is the perfeot and finished
product after practice As comDared
with other efforts in this line It is cer-
tainly tho crowning one Those who
have seen tho corn palace at Sioux
City Iowa say this is muoh the best
All Is bright fresh and green It is
Texas as she will be found from one end
of ber vast domain to the other today
It Is a picture that takes in her all
In that it attempts more and accom
plishes all that it attempts Is it superior
to the corn palace or any other efforts
in its line
The Palace Is fully twice as large as
it was last year and there are more than
twice as many exhibits nearly all ot
wbioh are new and orlginnl In short
it is a success
Five thousand people visited the Palaoe
on Saturday and last Sunday was Dallas
day and the attendance was large
San Antonio will have a day before
long
In one of the corners the reporter for
the Times has at last discovered an ex-
hibit from Bexar It pretends to be
representation of tho main building of
the International fair done in the differ-
ent woods found in that county The
piece ot Itself is not bad but the diffi-
culty is in finding out what it is as tho
announcement appears in chalk written
on the wall back of It Altogether San
Antonio and Bexar county might have
done something much mora creditable
A little more work in finishing off the
display of this piece alone If nothing
more would result in a great good to old

Fort Worth Tex May 13 As her
advocates in the words of the traveling
man express it Fort Worth has more
sand to the square Inch among her in
habitants than any ether city
Fort Worth of these later days delights
only in the superlative She takes no
stock in anything unless she can bust
the whole mtrket Its whole hog or
nono with her
For instance of hotels she has practi-
cally none In railroad depots fine
residences street adornments modesty
In heralding her every little achieve-
ments and many other things to whloh
cities generally pay attention she prao
tlcally takes no stook But this is not
saying that she is not a hummer in
many things for she is When it comes
to a Spring Palace she is easily the won-
der of the world and ought to receive the
warmest praise and love ot all Texas of
wbioh this marvolous work is the best
exponent for It is the exposition of the
whole stats at a glance
Then again look at ber clectrlo street
railways Are they not a wonder for a
oity about half the size ot San Antonio
Thirtytwo miles of as finely equipped
electric car line as was ever built is cal-
culated to give people an idea of what
rapid transit is like x
It goes without saying that when Fort
Worth gots into anything she goes in on
a large scale or else she stays out
t Fort Worth has a natatorium as fine
as that of any city
Fort Worth has a oyclorama of the
battle of Missionary Ridge a thing sel-
dom seen outside of the large oities
Yes Fort Worth is progressive Tbey
all say so They cant help saying so
It strikes strangers that way
Fort Worth made a bank clearing ot
831732391 for the year 1889 as against
SIC099235 for 1838 She advertises this
fact aud it does her lots of good
Fort Worth has gained in six months
an iron works and rolling mill located
the Dixie wagon works In prooess ot
ereotion the Alamosa Heights woolen
mill located the Indiana screen door
door blind sash and general wood work
faotory looated the Texas tannery and
shoe factory located the Fort Worth
university Methodist Eplsoopal ohuroh
buildings to coat 5100000 endowment
fund to be 5200000 or more the stovo
foundry ready for business
The Spring Palace ran the city of Fort
Worth 528000 Into debt last year It
was the starter and this with three
weeks ot rain made it bard sledding
But did this gritty little city whimper
any No not by any manner ot means
She knew what the Spring Palaca bad
meant to her poor as it was In com-
parison with what she had hoped to do
She knew that nothing that had ever
been started in this country bad been
tuoh an attraction and valuable adver-
tisement as this Spring Palace was So
the business men of Fort Worth went
down in their pockets and paid this 28
000 deflolt without saying a word That
is the inside history of this business
And this year when they wanted to
make a success of their Spring Palaoe it
required no extra effort to raise 550000
to start the enterprise
